Rotterdam Rooftop Walk emerges on the Coolsingel

Rotterdam Rooftop Walk emerges on the Coolsingel

ROTTERDAM, 4 May 2022 - Starting Thursday 5 May, festival organization Rotterdamse Dakendagen will be selling tickets for the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk. With stairs and a spectacular air bridge 29.5 metres high, the roofs of the Bijenkorf and WTC Rotterdam will be connected and made accessible.

Once at the top, the visitor will experience a future image of the city. In it, the 'roof landscape' will be fully utilized for greenery, art, housing, recreation, food production, the generation of energy and more. All developments on the Coolsingel can be followed live via a livestream from the Schielandtoren.

The walking route opens on 26 May, Ascension Day, and can be visited until 24 June. Rotterdam Rooftop Walk is a one-off project in addition to the annual Dakendagen weekend, which takes place from 3 to 5 June. On that weekend, including the Rooftop Walk, 35 roofs in the city can be visited. A visit to the Rooftop Walk costs €3.50 for adults, while children go for free. Ticket sales for both events start on 5 May 2012 at rotterdamsedakendagen.nl and rooftopwalk.nl.

Rotterdam Rooftop Walk from 26 May to 24 June 2022

The design of the route is a collaboration between architects MVRDV and Rotterdam Rooftop Days, executed in scaffolding material by Dutch Scaffolding. The walk starts with a set of stairs on Beursplein to the monumental roof of WTC Rotterdam. The crossing of the Coolsingel takes place via a 60-metre-long air bridge. Swinging across the roof of the Bijenkorf, the route then ends on the roof of the Q-Park next to the department store. After that, the public descends into the Aert van Nesstraat, via a scaffolding staircase along the facade of the building. During the route, visitors will experience how the space on flat city roofs can be better utilized. For example, there is a tiny house — including inhabitants — on the roof, artists depict a sustainable future for city dwellers, and new methods are used to generate energy, use rainwater and make roofs greener. The Rotterdam Rooftop Walk is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 and can only be visited upon reservation of a time slot.

Rotterdam Rooftop Days from 3 to 5 June 2022

The annual Rotterdam Rooftop Days festival will be held from 3 to 5 June, with Luchtpark Hofbogen as the festival heart. You can visit this central roof for free for food, drinks, live music and a festival atmosphere with a view. You can visit the roof by yourself by booking one of the roof routes on 4 and 5 June: a walk or bike ride from roof to roof, with a small-scale programme at the locations. Visitors can also be accompanied by a guide during one of 11 different roof tours. Theatre and musical acts complete the programme. On Friday, 3 June, the official opening of the festival and the International Rooftop Knowledge Day will take place. Guests from home and abroad will come to Rotterdam or meet online for this English-language knowledge day about the potential of flat roofs. This collaboration with Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam (AIR) takes place on the temporary, bright pink roof structure Het Podium: an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut and designed by MVRDV.

Trompenburg Gardens to host Cactus Festival on 26 & 27 March

Trompenburg Gardens to host Cactus Festival on 26 & 27 March

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum is organizing a Cactus Festival on 26 and 27 March in the beautiful botanical garden on the edge of Rotterdam city centre. The theme of the entire weekend is 'succulents', the collective name for cacti and related plants such as carnivorous plants.

Various cactus workshops, tours and lectures will be held in and around the desert greenhouse and there will be an exhibition of Trompenburg's unique 'Living Stones' collection. There will also be a mini market where growers will sell their succulents and other fun items, and you can eat at a Mexican food truck, entirely in keeping with the theme.

P.S: do you have your own cactus or other succulent that is not doing well? Dr. Cactus will be available all weekend!

Festival for cactus lovers

Who is not a fan these days? Cacti and succulents can be found in every household. Besides the fact that they look perfect in bohemian, retro or industrial interiors, they can also be kept alive by (almost) anyone without a green thumb. During the Cactus Festival, these succulents will take centre stage, where visitors can learn more about taking care of their precious plants. Various workshops, guided tours, lectures and an exhibition will be held. In addition, visitors can stroll around the mini market where growers sell their special cacti, succulents and even carnivorous plants. They can also buy flower pots and other fun (gift) items at the market.

Minimarket Line-up

There are various stands at the mini market, including the Dutch Succulenta Association, which has been the association for lovers of cacti and other succulents since 1919. SYBotanicA will also have its own stand, where you will find special earth and components such as moss, perlite, bark and gravel, terrariums as well as plants. Sjaan Storsbergen and Wouter Noordeloos will also be present to offer their special collection of succulents, cacti and carnivorous plants. To make the South-American feeling complete, the Mexican 'Esa's Nacho's' food truck will serve delicious nachos, burritos and corn soup.

Workshops & Tours

During the Cactus Festival there are various activities to take part in. There will be a lecture on keeping and caring for (hardy) succulents in your garden, and there is an exhibition of Trompenburg's unique 'Living Stones' collection. During the workshop 'Cactus pulling' participants learn, under the guidance of expert 'cactus men', how to take cuttings themselves. From Trompenburg they receive a cactus, which they can take home afterwards. During the workshop, Trompenburg's cactus men will share their tips and tricks on the right way to water and which ornamental pots are suitable or not, etc.

In addition, there will be guided tours, during which the 'cactus men' will take participants through Trompenburg's greenhouse. They will guide visitors along the various continents that form the mother countries of the many succulents. You will travel to South America and South Africa, among others, and discover special varieties such as the 'Princess of the night' and the living stones. Perhaps they will tell the story of the cactus that survived the war or show you the over 100-year-old agave.

Feeling inspired? 'Bring your music and paint' in Rotterdam

Do you like to draw or paint? 'Muziek uit de verf' invites you to 'bring your own music' and create a work of art. All the materials are supplied on location. The event takes place on 8 March 2022 in De Groene Passage Rotterdam and is organized by iederal.

Music as a source of inspiration is nothing new. But painting or drawing with your own headphones or earphones, while channelling inspiration from music that touches you, is perhaps a new challenge. On 8 March 2022, the iederal organization is setting up an event that meets this (perhaps still undiscovered) need.

How it works?

Paint, materials and easels are available on location. An apron will be provided for you, but it is recommended that you wear dirty/old clothes just to be sure. You bring music that touches you and earphones or a headset.

You just listen to the music you have brought (of course, while using your own earphones or headphones), experience the inspiration and paint. After painting, you show your artwork and share your music with others. You'll be asked to explain why it inspires you and how you arrived at your creative choices. The goal of this, is to experience a connection. After the event, you take your masterpiece home with you.

Tickets and registration

There will be painting from 19.30 to 21.00 hrs, at De Groene Passage in Rotterdam. You can find more information about the costs, the location and registration on the event website.

Online activities

In addition, there are several (online) activities that offer medical and maritime professionals the opportunity to learn more about the work that Mercy Ships does in Africa. These activities will be online soon.

About the Global Mercy

The Global Mercy is Mercy Ships' first ship designed and built specifically as a hospital ship. Previous ships, including the current Africa Mercy, have all been transformed into hospital ships that previously served a different purpose. The ship is 174 metres long and has a gross tonnage of 37,000 tonnes. It has six operating theatres and can accommodate more than 600 volunteers from all over the world representing many disciplines, including surgeons, maritime personnel, cooks, teachers, electricians and more.

"The Global Mercy is a unique ship" says Marianne Havinga, director of Mercy Ships Holland. "It is a complete hospital ship, equipped with modern technology and custom-made instruments. It enables us to offer the highest quality care to the poorest people in the world. At the same time, it offers volunteers an excellent opportunity to use their talents in service and to gain an extraordinary experience."

According to the Lancet Global Surgery 2030 Report, an estimated 16.9 million people die each year due to lack of access to surgical care. More than 93 per cent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa lacks access to safe and timely surgical care. As COVID-19 threatens the stability of already fragile healthcare systems worldwide, the need for basic life-saving care is greater than ever, especially in less fortunate countries. The Global Mercy will provide several African countries with a safe and clean medical environment, with assistance and resources from some of the best-trained doctors in the world. During the expected life span of 50 years, it is estimated that more than 150,000 lives will be changed on board by surgery alone.
