Rotterdam Zombie Walk

If you're looking for a one of a kind experience, consider taking part in the Rotterdam Zombie Walk. The first Zombie Walk in Rotterdam took place back in 2014. The event attracted over 300 zombies. Fast forward a couple of years later and the event is expected to draw even larger numbers of the undead.

The next zombie invasion is happening on Saturday, 27th of October. At 20:00, zombies will start their takeover of the city centre, going block by block as they stagger along the route.

About HEMA Foundation

HEMA Foundation was founded in 2018. An independent foundation that, among other things, is committed to language skills. Good reading and writing can have a great positive impact on daily life. Yet 2.5 million Dutch people have great difficulty with this. And 1 in 10 Dutch children leave primary school without being able to read and write sufficiently.
Low literacy is often passed on from generation to generation. For kids growing up in a language-poor family where little is spoken and read aloud, the chance of low literacy later increases considerably. That is why HEMA Foundation supports language projects aimed at families with young children, sets up awareness campaigns and organizes language activities for young and old. Like this reading afternoon for children and their families.

Launch of special LGBTI Awards during Rotterdam Pride

Launch of special LGBTI Awards during Rotterdam Pride

Inspiring role models to be honoured at the very first Cocktail Awards show during Rotterdam Pride week. The event takes place at Cocktail Fest in Maassilo.

Rotterdam Pride kicks off on September 27th. What does this mean? Four days of inclusiveness and diversity with lots of activities and parties from the 27th through the 30th of September 2018. The highlight of Rotterdam Pride 2018 is the presentation of the first-ever Cocktail Awards on Saturday, 29th of September in the Maassilo.

With the launch of the awards, the initiators want to reflect on special people who inspire others to be themselves. The 33 selected candidates are all examples and inspirations for the LGBTI community. A vote can be cast on candidates in four categories; the most beautiful drag, most influential influencer, biggest hotspot and best DJ. The winners will be announced during Cocktail Fest - the main party of Rotterdam Pride - with locally well-known invited guests and performers such as Gerard Joling, Gordon, Fred van Leer and Everon Jackson Hooi.

"Sometimes it is hard work to be yourself. It helps if there are role models who show that you can be who you are and love who you want" says organiser Robin Pors (Vengaboys). "But we often do not think about it or simply think it's normal that these people do this. That's why we want to roll out the pink carpet.

Among the 33 inspirational LGBTI nominees for The Cocktail Awards, 2018 are Karin Bloemen, Jan-Kees de Jager, Diva MayDay and Lady Galore. The awards are a collaboration between Cocktail Fest, OUTtv and Attitude Magazine. You can vote until September 24 via outtvpro.com/cocktail.

Blooming LGBTI culture in Rotterdam

The success of Rotterdam goes hand in hand with the resurgence of Rotterdam's famous LGBTI culture. The return of several well-known LGBTI events, the increasingly crowded street parties during Rotterdam Pride and the third edition of Cocktail Fest, show that the city is once again becoming an attractive LGBTI destination.

Cocktail Fest is known for its seamless amalgamation of various target groups and party scenes in the free-minded community. With 5 areas in the Maassilo, the festival has something for everyone. Visitors can go for pop, R&B, techno, deep-house and circuit-house. The motto of the festival is 'Be yourself, Experience everyone', and with an all-encompassing dress code, people are encouraged to dress whichever way they want. Previous editions of Cocktail Fest have attracted thousands of visitors from all over Europe.

Netherlands Science Weekend

Netherlands Science Weekend

Science Weekend is held all across the Netherlands on the 6th and 7th of October. The Science Weekend, known locally as 'Weekend van de Wetenschap', is the largest national event in the field of science and technology.

For 48 hours, visitors to the Science Weekend will gain exclusive behind the scenes access to more than 350 participating companies, institutions, museums, universities and research institutes whose doors are normally closed to the public.

Science Weekend ambassadors

"We have to make young people enthusiastic about science and technology, that is the basis for our future," says André Kuipers, the famous Dutch ESA astronaut who is again joining the science weekend as ambassador. The other two ambassadors this year are artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and Eveline Crone, professor of Neurocognitive Developmental Psychology.

You'll find the three ambassadors at various locations during Science Week. For example, André Kuipers will be stationed at ESA / ESTEC in Noordwijk on the 7th of October. The event features lectures about space travel and visitors can also meet the celebrated Dutch astronaut.

Daan Roosegaarde can be found at the living laboratory Space Waste Lab at Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland (KAF) on October 6th. Daan will show visitors why space debris isn't only a threat, but also as a potential source of new creativity.

Eveline can be found in Leiden on Sunday, October 7th. Together with the Brain and Development Research Center at Leiden University and the NeuroLabNL Start Impulse project, she will discuss cutting edge scientific research into the developing adolescent brain.

Science Weekend activities in Rotterdam

These are couple of the highlights of the Science Weekend activities taking place in Rotterdam. Be sure to visit the official website for a complete overview.

Design your own windmill at Maritiem Museum (6 & 7 October)
Should a windmill have 3 or 6 blades to catch a lot of wind? Do they have to be very high in the air or a bit lower and closer to the water? And should the head of the windmill be able to turn? Wind energy is a clean and sustainable energy and we want to deal with it as effectively as possible. Windmills are also beautiful, fun or funny to see and they should not make too much noise. Show how you think you should.

Learn all about recycling in the beer brewing process at BlueCity Lab (6 October)
When brewing beer, the residual product is left over. This contains a lot of proteins and fibers: it can be used well as animal feed. Bakers also use it to make bread. But what else can happen? Think about the future of beer brewing and how breweries can deal with this waste!

Tax & Customs museum (6 & 7 October)
In the Tax & Customs museum there is a lot to discover during Weekend of Science. See a detection dog at work and learn everything about this special canine. You can also learn how to distinguish counterfeiting of real items.

Natural History Museum Rotterdam (7 October)
Curator Klaas Post gives an exciting lecture about the expeditions he has undertaken for the Natural History Museum Rotterdam. During these trips fossils were discovered that are 5 to 8.8 million years old. Many of these finds are also new species that are unique to science. After the lecture, Klaas Post will provide an explanation of the exhibit.

John Cale (Velvet Underground) to perform show in Rotterdam

John Cale (Velvet Underground) to perform show in Rotterdam

On December 3rd 2018, Rotterdam welcomes John Cale, one of the most widely respected and influential rock stars on the planet. Cale's musical track record includes over 20 solo albums, spanning various genres from avant-garde to pop and electronica.

From the Velvet Underground to the Stooges

The distinctive, droning violin sound of John Cale made the legendary The Velvet Underground a distinctive and groundbreaking collective in the sixties. It has since been copied often, but Cale continues to push boundaries restlessly.
Over the years, the stubborn musician known as Cale applied his classically trained knowledge and skills to propel acts like The Stooges, Patti Smith, Modern Lovers and Happy Mondays to a higher level. He has worked with great composers such as LaMonte Young, John Cage, Terry Riley and Brian Eno.

This concert is brought to you buy Rotown, Motel Mozaique Concerts and Theater Rotterdam.

Tickets

The ticket sale for John Cale starts at 10 am on Friday, September 7th. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. The large hall at Theater Rotterdam has both seating and standing room.
