The third edition of the Rotterdam Night Walk is scheduled for the evening of 27 December, 2023. Participants can choose between two routes, approximately 7 or 12 km long, through the illuminated streets of Rotterdam. The event will take place after the Christmas holidays, providing an opportunity for walking enthusiasts to engage in physical activity.

New route explores Delfshaven and western Rotterdam

This year, the event will feature a new route. Instead of starting and finishing in the city centre, the walk will explore Delfshaven and the western parts of Rotterdam. Entertainment will be provided along the route, enhancing the overall experience.

Event details

Participants will receive a starting ticket and refreshments during the walk. A commemorative pin will be given at the finish line. The event will commence as darkness falls, between 17:45 and 19:00.

Supporting Stichting Jarige Job

This year's event will support Stichting Jarige Job, a foundation that assists families in the Netherlands who cannot afford to celebrate their children's birthdays. The foundation provides a birthday box worth €35, containing all the essentials for a proper birthday celebration at home and school.

On 22 October, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam will organise an event named "XXL Borduuratelier De Laatste Steek" (XXL Embroidery Workshop The Last Stitch). This event will serve as the concluding chapter of the exhibition "Geen woorden maar draden." The museum will transform into a large embroidery workshop, offering various activities for visitors. Those with names related to embroidery will be granted complimentary admission for the day.

The exhibition "Geen woorden maar draden" has focused on the resurgence of handcrafts in society. It has explored how people are turning to activities like embroidery as a meaningful pastime and a part of 'slow living.' The museum's collection has been a significant source of inspiration for the programming, which has seen consistent participation.

Community engagement

Throughout the summer, the museum hosted embroidery activities seven days a week, attracting nearly 4,500 children and their families. Additionally, almost 350 people participated in guided tours followed by embroidery sessions. Special accommodations were made for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors. The museum also offered downloadable embroidery cards inspired by the collection, allowing people to continue their projects at home.

Educational initiatives

Crafts Council Nederland launched "De Borduurschool" (The Embroidery School) in conjunction with the exhibition's opening. This initiative provided a structured environment for learning embroidery techniques at various levels. Thirteen masterclasses and workshops were organised, attended by 120 participants and nine young talents aged 16-30. These young talents will have the opportunity to showcase their work during the Dutch Design Week 2023.

The repertoire will include classics ranging from 'Jailhouse Rock' to 'Burning Love'. Three Elvis Tribute Artists, each with a history of accolades, will perform hits spanning from the 1950s rock 'n roll era to the 1970s Las Vegas shows. The artists will be accompanied by the Graceland Band from Wales. The artists will be backed by the Graceland Band, a 10-member ensemble from Wales. The band has a history of accompanying various Elvis Tribute Artists on stages worldwide.

The artists behind the tribute

Gordon Davis from Malta, Emilio Santoro from England, and Ciaran Houlihan from Ireland are the artists slated to perform. Davis has received numerous titles for his portrayal of Elvis. Santoro, at just 20 years old, has already gained international recognition, including a notable appearance on 'America's Got Talent'. Houlihan has been performing his tribute to Elvis for over 16 years and has received multiple awards.

Hosted by Wereldmuseum and Roffa Mon Amour, the event titled “An Evening Full of Afro Caribbean Healing” will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. The evening is part of the ongoing exhibition Kruispunt (Crossroads), which delves into the cultural dynamics, influences, and encounters in the city.

Film screening offers a glimpse into Curaçao culture

The event will feature the screening of the film “La Última Ascensión” directed by Kevin Osepa. The 2021 film follows the life of Rowin, a 22-year-old fisherman from Banda Abou in Curaçao, who experiences a transformative encounter with a mysterious young man. The film explores themes of identity, tradition, and the human condition.

Artist talk aims to deepen cultural understanding

Following the film, an artist talk will be led by Nychenda Fecunda, featuring Kevin Osepa and musician Vernon Chatlein. Osepa, an award-winning director and visual artist, will discuss his works, which are also part of the Kruispunt exhibition. Vernon Chatlein, a musician and percussionist, will share insights into the traditional Curaçao music style known as Tambú.

Tambú music performance celebrates Curaçao heritage

The evening will culminate in a live Tambú music performance by Vernon Chatlein. Tambú (Tambú) is more than just a musical genre; it encapsulates dance, singing, and the life spirit of the people from Curaçao. Chatlein's newest music project, Grupo Kimina, will make its debut on the ballroom stage of the Wereldmuseum.
