Rotterdam welcomes the beautiful anthology of one of the most exciting oeuvres in pop history. Paul Weller will perform an acoustic show in Theater Rotterdam (Schouwburg) on Saturday, October 6th, 2018.

The biggest rock star in England

As bandleader of The Jam, Paul Weller became the biggest rock star in England; bands like The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis eventually followed in his footsteps. Even after his days at The Jam, he has left a lasting mark on pop music. With The Style Council he exchanged post-punk for soul and jazz-pop and scored big hits like My Ever Changing Mood Swings and You're The Best.

The best-dressed man in the rock biz continues to pursue his own interests and the celebrated career of Weller has become even more interesting through the years. Though general public interest may have increasingly declined over the years, within the niches, Weller continued to make interesting records that were embraced by critics. From experimental dub & reggae to spoken word electropunk and psychedelic odes to Alice Coltrane.

The ticket sale for 'A Special Acoustic Performance' by The Modfather starts at 10 am on Wednesday, May 30th. Tickets are available through the three organizers of the concert: Rotown, Motel Mozaique Concerts and Theater Rotterdam.

Rotterdam Rooftop Days to be opened with highline stunt

On Saturday, June 2nd at 12:00 the Rotterdam Dakendagen will be officially opened with a special stunt. Highliners will cross between the roofs of the Marriott Hotel and the First, two skyscrapers at Weena and Stationsplein, doing so at a dizzying height of 130 meters.

The members of the Rotterdam highline group Dreamwalkers will be balancing on a 140-meter long elastic cord, stretched between the two buildings. This opening act is best viewed from Stationsplein. It is advisable to bring binoculars with you.

More than three times as high

Last year, the Dreamwalkers also opened the Rotterdam Roof Days, by crossing between the two Lijnbaan apartments, at a height of 40 meters. This year's feat will be no repeat exercise; the line is not only three times higher this year but it's also three times as long. After this opening act, the roofs are officially declared open.

Launch of Rotterdam Rooftop Days

In total, a record number of 56 roofs are part of the festival. Though the festival actually starts on Friday with special events on rooftops, it is on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June that 16 exclusive open roofs can be visited. All you need is a Dakpas (rooftop pass), which is for sale for € 7.50. The remaining 40 roofs are part of special tours and events.

Forget the gym and come train your abs during the comedy night Rotterdam Laughs on February 9th. AOT Events will bring you English spoken stand-up comedy at RAAF Rotterdam with a microphone, jokes and a great audience.

This will be the 14th edition of Rotterdam Laughs, an event first started in September 2016 after previously organizing multiple Dutch open mic nights at Studio de Bakkerij in Rotterdam Noord (North). Master of Ceremony is Said El Hassnaoui. Said, also known as WestSaid (www.westsaid.com), is a permanent member of the Comedy Explosion, winner of the Comedy Slam and organizer of several comedy nights in the Netherlands and abroad.

Do you know many Rotterdam comedians and are they different than other comedians?

Said: I think I know most comedians from Rotterdam. Maybe all of them. And they are all different. I guess every comedian has his own style which makes him or her unique in their own way

What makes it so fun to play in Rotterdam?

Said: Audience in Rotterdam have a great sense of humour and love to laugh. That makes them the perfect audience to perform for.

Is the public different from other places in the Netherlands?

Said: Dutch audience is different everywhere in the Netherlands. Expats are the same almost everywhere.

What is the craziest thing that ever happened on stage in Rotterdam?

Said: I do not have any weird or odd experiences in Rotterdam.

What are your plans for 2018 in Rotterdam and beyond?

Said: In Rotterdam, I organize a Dutch spoken open mic in Studio de Bakkerij and an English spoken open mic in RAAF. Both shows are doing really well and I hope more people will get to see our shows.

Comics, interviews and a lot of cosplay at second edition of Comic Con Ahoy in Rotterdam

Comic Con is hot! It’s grown to become one of the most popular pop culture events in the Netherlands and attracts thousands of people per edition. The Comic Con Europe organization (Rotterdam and Amsterdam) and Dutch Comic Con organization (twice a year in Utrecht) have been competing in the Netherlands for a number of years, but fortunately, there is enough room for each to survive. The second edition of Comic Con Ahoy in Rotterdam, held on the first weekend of March, was quite busy and cosy.

Comic Con Ahoy offers everything related to fandom: there is all the merchandise you want, you can play new and old school games in the gaming area or take a picture with the actor from your favourite TV shows or movie. Many national and international guests from different genres and disciplines, such as comics, film, cosplay and TV are present. Unfortunately, some fans of these Hollywood stars are deeply disappointed; most of the big names didn’t show. Christopher Lambert from Highlander, Chris Rankin from Harry Potter, Charles Dance from The Game of Thrones and Steven Ogg from The Walking Dead unexpectedly couldn't make it due to bad weather.

Comic Con RotterdamFortunately, with names such as Ronn Mass from Bold and the Beautiful and Richard Harmon from The 100 there were still plenty of famous stars during this edition of Comic Con Ahoy, but also Rotterdam's own heroes like Robert van der Kroft from Sjors and Sjimmie and other Dutch comic artists were present. The event featured several panels with the stars on the big stage who were ready to answer any and all questions and talk about past, current and future projects.

At Comic Con, you can get a signature and photo from the artist, with prices varying between 20 euros all the way up to 100 euros for a photo with two people from The 100. But the best part is watching all the beautiful cosplayers strolling around at the venue. Johnny Depp, Luke Skywalker, Rick and Morty, Batman... everybody is there and willing to go on the picture with you.

Comic Con Rotterdam

It is striking that the rival organization Dutch Comic Con also organizes an edition in Utrecht in four weeks time. On March 31st and April 1st, 2018, the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht will be transformed into the largest Comic Con in the Netherlands. This makes the need for the Rotterdam edition a little a bit unnecessary, but they had the luck of being the first event of 2018 which helps to attract enough audience anyway.

The various Comic Cons in the Netherlands have everything you could ask for! It's definitely a great weekend full of spectacle, entertainment, special guests, workshops, great experiences where you can meet new friends with whom you can share your passions.

Open City Hall marks festive start of winter season in Rotterdam

Holiday Season & Christmas

This year, the municipality of Rotterdam is joining forces with a number of cultural institutions to organise a programme of winter-themed events, spread out across the entire city.

The festive kick-off of the winter season is on Friday, 8th of December. The doors of city hall (Stadhuis) will be open to the public from 17:00 onwards. The city hall's garden (stadhuistuin) will be transformed into a winter garden.

Tree lighting ceremony

As is tradition, Rotterdam city Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb will officially light the Christmas tree at exactly 18:00. The rest of the evening will feature various musical performances and Urban Guides will provide guided tours inside city hall.

Throughout the entire evening, all sorts of activities are organized in which young and old can participate for free. Tours in the town hall take place at various times.
