How fast can you bike? Register for the Maastunnel time trial

Ever wanted to cycle through the Maastunnel? On Monday, July 23rd, you'll finally get your chance to clock the fastest time on the most unique route in Rotterdam!

The monumental Maastunnel (1942) is the oldest tunnel in the Netherlands and is currently being renovated. Because the Maastunnel is a monument, a lot of effort has been made to restore the tunnel to its original specs. Among other things, sand-colored asphalt has been poured - a reference to the vowel floor that originally adorned the tunnel floor when it was was first opened in 1942.

The works won't be completed until mid-2019. However, in July 2018, the western car tube will be ready. The Maastunnel time trail is being organised in order to mark this special occasion. Race and sports cyclists are welcome to clock their personal best in the brand new car tunnel.

About the Maastunnel renovation

Since the summer of 2017, the municipality of Rotterdam has been carrying out a large-scale renovation and restoration of the Maastunnel. In total this renovation will take two years. However, to keep the city as accessible as possible, one tunnel tube is always to remain open for traffic to Rotterdam Noord. Currently, that's the east tube. After the tunnel time trial, a 'tube switch' will take place. From then on, traffic will flow through the renovated west tube, while work will continue on the east tube. The direction of travel remains the same, so that Erasmus MC can always be reached quickly.

Once the car tunnel is completed in 2019, renovations will start on the bicycle and pedestrian tunnels.

Bijenkorf Rotterdam opens temporary Lavender Garden on roof

Bijenkorf Rotterdam opens temporary Lavender Garden on roof

Rotterdam Rooftop Days (Dakendagen) and Bijenkorf join forces to plant a lavender garden on the roof of the iconic department store.

More than 3,000 plants are planted to create a sea of purple, fragrant flowers. The garden will not only serve as a refuge for people, but also for bees. Roofs and bees are not an unknown combination. High above the hustle and bustle of the city, the bees can nestle in peace. That's one big reason why many beekeepers keep their bee colonies at altitude.

Rotterdam Architecture Month

During the month of June, the Rotterdam Architecture Month, the garden will be open every weekend within the opening hours of De Bijenkorf. Visitors of the Rotterdam Rooftop Days can be the first to get on the roof. The grand opening of the bee-friendly roof garden takes place during the Rotterdam Rooftop Days, held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of June. De Bijenkorf is located on the Coolsingel.

For De Bijenkorf, this is isn't the organisation's first foray into the world of bee conservation. The high end department store, together with partners, has previously launched the initiative The Pollinators; a platform that works towards the conservation of bees their living conditions in the Netherlands.

The Invictus Games are an initiative of the British Prince Harry who is also the patron of the event. The Duke of Sussex will come to the Netherlands at the end of July 2018 as part of the preparations. It is unknown whether his wife Meghan Markle will also be present.

When are the 2020 Invictus Games?

The exact dates for the Invictus Games in the Netherlands are yet to be announced.

About the 2020 Invictus Games

In February 2018, on the initiative of former army general Mart de Kruif, the Netherlands made a successful bid in London to bring the Games to the Netherlands in 2020. In 2020, it will be exactly 75 years ago since the Netherlands was liberated and the Second World War ended. The Dutch branch of the organization will soon come out with more information. The international sporting event has been held annually since 2014.

Paul Weller to perform special acoustic show in Rotterdam

Paul Weller to perform special acoustic show in Rotterdam

Rotterdam welcomes the beautiful anthology of one of the most exciting oeuvres in pop history. Paul Weller will perform an acoustic show in Theater Rotterdam (Schouwburg) on Saturday, October 6th, 2018.

The biggest rock star in England

As bandleader of The Jam, Paul Weller became the biggest rock star in England; bands like The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis eventually followed in his footsteps. Even after his days at The Jam, he has left a lasting mark on pop music. With The Style Council he exchanged post-punk for soul and jazz-pop and scored big hits like My Ever Changing Mood Swings and You're The Best.

Maverick

The best-dressed man in the rock biz continues to pursue his own interests and the celebrated career of Weller has become even more interesting through the years. Though general public interest may have increasingly declined over the years, within the niches, Weller continued to make interesting records that were embraced by critics. From experimental dub & reggae to spoken word electropunk and psychedelic odes to Alice Coltrane.

The ticket sale for 'A Special Acoustic Performance' by The Modfather starts at 10 am on Wednesday, May 30th. Tickets are available through the three organizers of the concert: Rotown, Motel Mozaique Concerts and Theater Rotterdam
