ROTTERDAM, 16 December 2024 – The official start of the new Baroeg music venue construction was celebrated today. Alderman Robert Simons marked the occasion, emphasising the cultural and economic importance of the iconic Rotterdam venue.
Start of construction for new Baroeg venue
Alderman Robert Simons (responsible for Real Estate, among others) ceremonially launched the construction of the new Baroeg music venue today. Speaking to a crowd of around 250 people, Simons reflected on the significance of Baroeg for Rotterdam. He underscored both its cultural impact and its role in boosting the local economy. “A new music venue attracts people and brings vibrancy to the neighbourhood. This is not just good for the Rotterdam music scene but also for everyone who lives, works, or does business here,” said Simons.
A future-proof venue for Baroeg
After more than 40 years, the original building on Spinozaweg had become outdated and was in need of replacement. The new venue will feature a modern concert hall, a larger backstage area for performers, and improved office facilities. At the same time, Baroeg's raw and authentic character, for which it is renowned, will be preserved.
The demolition of the old building took place in November, during which loyal fans were given the opportunity to take a piece of the venue as a keepsake. This week, the first steps towards the new construction began. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2025, with Baroeg reopening its doors in 2026. During construction, concerts will continue at partner venues, ensuring that music lovers can still enjoy performances.
Baroeg’s cultural legacy
Baroeg has been a staple of Rotterdam’s cultural scene since 1981, earning a reputation as the city's oldest music venue. Known as a hub for alternative and heavy music, Baroeg has also gained national and international recognition. Renowned acts like Within Temptation, Volbeat, and Epica began their careers on Baroeg’s stage, while Rotterdam icons such as Raven van Dorst, Jules Deelder, and Frederique Spigt have also performed there.
In 2022, Baroeg was officially recognised as Cultural Heritage of Rotterdam (Cultureel Rotterdams Erfgoed), cementing its role as an essential part of the city’s identity. The new venue is set to honour this legacy while providing a modern platform for emerging talent and hosting popular dance nights once again.
Address and directions
The new Baroeg venue will remain at Spinozaweg, located in Rotterdam’s Lombardijen district. This area is easily accessible by public transport, including the nearby Lombardijen train station and multiple bus and tram lines.
