Digital Port Day enlists talking drone-robots as tour guides

Rotterdam, 27 August 2020 - On Saturday 5 September, World Port Days will showcase the inner workings of the Port of Rotterdam during an event dubbed Digital Port Day. During the event, fans will be guided (digitally) by two talking drone-robots, Amy and Djimmy.

Amy is intelligent, rational and technically minded, Djimmy is a tough leader who craves the romance of the port. This makes the contemporary duo the personification of the port of Rotterdam, where hard-working people and innovative technology complement and strengthen each other on a daily basis.

Stichting Wereldhavendagen developed Amy and Djimmy in collaboration with Rotterdam Festivals and events agency Fjuze, which has a lot of experience with innovative use of technology. The presence of Amy and Djimmy at the Digital Port Day is unique as it is quite rare that drones are provided with a personality and used in such a way at a (digital) event.

"The uniqueness of drones is that they show a new perspective of a world only known to us from the ground up," says Klaas Rohde, owner of Fjuze. "For us, drones are flying robots, in which we see personalities.

"Thanks to Amy and Djimmy we can show a whole new side of the port of Rotterdam," says Sabine Bruijnincx, director of Stichting Wereldhavendagen. "We are very proud that thanks to the creative collaboration with Fjuze and Rotterdam Festivals we can offer our audience a real first during the Digital Port Day.

Digital Port Day Rotterdam: what to expect?

The Digital Port Day is an initiative of the World Port Days Foundation. On Saturday 5 September 2020, the website and social media of the World Port Days and media partners Rijnmond and OPEN Rotterdam will offer a glimpse into the past, present and future of the port of Rotterdam. The presentation is in robot hands of Amy and Djimmy and also flesh and blood 'Digital Port Reporters' Kirsten and Remco.

The audience can enjoy unique vlogs, live streams and live radio all day long with stories about special and innovative port companies and ships. There will also be beautiful photos and video footage with highlights from the past editions of the World Port Days. The day traditionally ends with a video recording of the evening show.

The Digital Port Day can be followed live on Saturday 5 September from 10:00 to 18:00 on the website of the World Port Days.

750 years Rotte | dam - expo at Museum Rotterdam

750 years Rotte | dam - expo at Museum Rotterdam

In 2020, it will be 750 years since the dam was laid in the Rotte. A historic moment for the creation of Rotterdam! To mark this milestone, Museum Rotterdam and Archeologie Rotterdam (BOOR), are organizing the exhibition '750 years Rotte | dam'.

Using various archaeological objects, texts and visual material - including special photographs, drawings and two new documentaries - various stories will be told in the expo. Learn everything about ships and locks, immerse yourself in the world of water management, and marvel at the history of Rotterdam. The top piece in the expo is a punter, a boat that was used to close the dam in the Rotte and was found during archaeological research in 1991.

At the beginning of the nineties, Rotterdam archaeologists were investigating the dam from which Rotterdam owes its name. Deep in the construction pit of the Willemsspoortunnel they make a sensational discovery: there is a complete boat under the dam! The punter-like vessel was used to close the last hole. The ship's wood also reveals when the dam was built: around 1270. This small ship, which created our city 750 years ago, is now on display for the first time in Museum Rotterdam!

The ship is a sensational Rotterdam relic: the punter is - almost literally - the basis of our world port city. The first Rotterdammers built their houses on the dam in the Rotte. Besides the original punter, the exhibition shows the centuries-old connection between Rotterdam, shipping and water management. From the ingenious drainage sluices in the medieval dam to the latest rain radar and smart roofs.

Visiting the 750 Years Rotte | dam expo

The exhibition 750 years Rotte | dam can be seen in Museum Rotterdam, from 5 September to 21 March 2021 and is a collaboration with Archeologie Rotterdam (BOOR) and is further made possible by Mondriaanfonds and Ik in 010.

Voet aan de Grond

In the adjacent Halvemaanpassage another expo will open on September 5th: Voet aan de Grond. A very nice addition to our project, and only 25 meters away!

To Be - Live music collab by YMP & Rotterdam Philharmonic

To Be - Live music collab by YMP & Rotterdam Philharmonic

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Y.M.P. join forces for the programme 'To be', which will take place on 24 and 25 September in the Doelen in Rotterdam. The concert is a crossover between hip-hop and classical music, with music, spoken word, theatre and visual images.

Ongoing collaboration Y.M.P. and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra

The Rotterdam orchestra and the spoken word artist worked together earlier this year. This is when they discovered the common ground that forms the basis for these concerts. On Liberation Day a video was launched by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra: an ode to freedom, in which four Rotterdam artists participated. One of them was the spoken word artist Y.M.P.
Now the collaboration will be continued with a full evening programme in de Doelen during which newly composed works by Y.M.P. and an exceptional composer will be presented.

New forms for a wide audience

For the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra the collaboration is a logical next step. "We would like to translate the innovative online musical experiences, which have done very well on video in recent months, into a live experience. That's a creative track that we're setting out for ourselves, in addition to everything we continue to do online. Entering into the experiment, that's what we've been interested in for some time now. And it suits us to make a little more room for it now," says director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra George Wiegel.

Y.M.P.: "This collaboration is a dream come true. From the beginning of my career, I have always said that I will someday make music for the orchestra. Those were big words, time to turn it into great deeds. In this production, classical music and hip-hop become a whole".

The concerts will take place in de Doelen on 24 and 25 September. More information on the website of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Chinese New Year in Rotterdam - date, location, programme

Chinese New Year in Rotterdam - date, location, programme

In Rotterdam, Chinese New Year is typically heralded with all kinds of activities in the city centre. Expect the awakening of the lion, fireworks, culinary tours, Chinese calligraphy, face painting, delicious food stands and traditional dances.

Chinese New Year (also referred to as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival) marks the start of a new year on the Chinese calendar. Contrary to Western New Year (based on the Gregorian calendar), Chinese Year is observed when the new moon appears between 21 January and 20 February and ends with a Lantern Festival on the 15th day of that year.

Celebrate Chinese New Year in Rotterdam

In Rotterdam, Chinese New Year celebrations are always on a Saturday. In 2020, that's on Saturday, February 1st.

There's a march from 12:30 to 13:00 along the Mauritsweg. The official awakening of the Lion is at 13:30. Afterwards, the parade kicks off along West-Kruiskade and Westersingel, from 15:00 to 18:00. The parade is the spectacle of the Chinese New Year and is quite crowded.

The lion dance will be performed by the Dutch Wushu Academy Xia Quan.

The parade will pass by various local businesses. Traditionally, the participating local businesses will hang a head of lettuce in front of the door, so that Nian the monster will eat this lettuce instead of the residents of the building. Fireworks will also be lit in front of the doors of these local businesses, because this will chase away the monster.

What to do at Rotterdam Chinese New Year?

For visitors to the event, there is plenty to do and Chinese culture to be experienced in Wijkpark Oude Westen. You can have your name translated and written in traditional Chinese calligraphy (and take it home with you). You can also get something tasty at the various food stands.

Moreover, there are culinary tours, there's dancing, kids can get their faces painted and to top it all off, the celebration ends with a professional fireworks display.
