Rotterdam Popstad: 70 years of musical history
The release of the book Rotterdam Popstad, written by Remko van Bork, will bring 70 years of Rotterdam’s pop music history to light. Published by Popunie, the comprehensive 550-page book documents the rise and development of the pop music scene in Rotterdam. The work spans the city’s transition from the early days of rock-'n-roll in the 1950s to the underground sounds of the 1980s, and further to gabber and hip-hop movements of the 1990s.
Iconic venues, such as Eksit, Nighttown, and De Doelen, are highlighted for their contributions to the vibrant musical identity of Rotterdam. Major events, including the Holland Pop Festival in 1970 and Pandora’s Music Box, are explored for their historical significance. The book also reflects on how the city’s evolution has shaped its musicians and their artistry.
Rotterdam’s influential artists
The book profiles prominent artists who have contributed to the city’s status as a centre for musical innovation. Figures such as Lee Towers, Paul Elstak, Ferry Corsten, and Davina Michelle are featured alongside emerging acts like Tramhaus and Neighbours Burning Neighbours. Special attention is given to the unique styles developed by these artists and their role in cementing Rotterdam’s reputation for creativity.
