Winne: Rotterdam’s influential hip-hop icon

ROTTERDAM, 14 March 2025 – As one of Rotterdam’s most prominent hip-hop artists, Winne has spent years using his music to tell the city’s stories. His latest album brings those stories even closer to home.

A preview evening with Winne

It's the evening of March 13th, 2025. Inside Muziekwerf, the historic charm of the former Mennonite church blends effortlessly with modern elegance. The room is bathed in atmospheric red lighting, creating a sense of intimacy and anticipation. Chairs arranged neatly in rows face a small stage, set simply with two armchairs and subtle branding of Winne's latest album, Mssyeh. Professional lights and high-quality audio equipment frame the scene, enhancing the anticipation among the quietly chatting attendees awaiting the artist's arrival.

Tonight marks an exclusive pre-release listening session for Winne’s latest album Mssyeh, organised in collaboration with audio brand Bowers & Wilkins. The partnership between Winne and Bowers & Wilkins has included various creative activities, such as a writers' camp, a visit to Bowers & Wilkins' headquarters in Worthing, and sessions at London's Abbey Road Studios. The evening continues this partnership, offering an intimate chance for guests to hear Winne discuss the stories and meanings behind his new music in a conversation moderated by Andrew Makkinga.

Winne: a Rotterdam icon

Winston Bergwijn, known professionally as Winne, has long been a cornerstone of Rotterdam’s vibrant hip-hop community. Emerging prominently in the early 2000s, he quickly rose to prominence due to his raw lyricism and dedication to authentic storytelling. His music, deeply rooted in the experiences and identity of Rotterdam, has resonated with generations of listeners.

Born in Paramaribo, Suriname, Winne relocated to Rotterdam at approximately one and a half years old. This early experience of migration significantly influenced his perspective and artistic voice. His music frequently explores themes of identity, belonging, and the migrant experience, making him relatable and inspirational, particularly for Rotterdam’s diverse international community.

The rise of Dutch hip-hop culture in the early 2000s significantly shaped Rotterdam's identity, providing a powerful voice for local youth and communities. For many growing up in Rotterdam at that time, hip-hop was more than music; it was an expressive outlet, a form of social commentary, and a source of pride that showcased the city’s resilience and diversity.

The story behind Mssyeh

Tonight's album preview began on an emotional note. When asked about the track Hemelvaart ("Ascension"), Winne struggled to find his words, visibly moved as he tried to explain the song’s meaning. Several moments passed before he could continue.

Winne shared that much of the new album, Mssyeh, is a tribute to Feis. The album's title bears Feis' last name, which also means 'Messiah,' adding a layer of significance to the project. He described Hemelvaart as a deeply symbolic track, with its rich string arrangements representing the soul leaving the body. Rather than adding his own verses, Winne chose to feature a spoken prayer on the track, a deliberate decision that reflects the song’s reflective and spiritual tone.

Winne's bond with Feis remained a recurring theme throughout the evening. Feis, a close friend and long-time collaborator, was tragically killed in 2019, a loss that deeply impacted Winne and the Rotterdam hip-hop community. The emotional weight of that absence was felt in the room, where many attendees were also friends of Feis.

From mentor to mural: Winne's lasting impact on Rotterdam

Winne’s influence extends far beyond music; he’s a cultural figure who embodies Rotterdam’s tough yet proud spirit. His ability to blend introspective storytelling with hard-hitting rap has cemented his status as a Rotterdam icon.

Winne’s music feels deeply authentic to locals, thanks to his frequent references to Rotterdam landmarks, streets, and cultural elements. As one of the city’s most respected rappers, he has inspired countless local talents to pursue hip-hop, encouraging them to embrace their roots while honing their craft. Winne has consistently supported emerging Rotterdam artists, helping shape the city’s hip-hop landscape. As a mentor and collaborator, he has given Rotterdam’s next generation of MCs a platform to grow.

During the evening, Winne reflects on this role, sharing a story about one of his former students from the Herman Brood Academie — now the voice behind the hook on one of his latest tracks.

Later, during the Q&A, a young man with dreadlocks stands up and tells Winne he’s an inspiration, expressing his dream of achieving what Winne has accomplished. “What does it feel like to reach that point?” he asks. Winne smiles and explains that he’s always focused on the present — a moment of humility and authenticity that reflects his grounded nature.

I’m paraphrasing here, as no phones were allowed in the hall that night.

Winne’s image, immortalised in a striking mural at Kruisplein, stands as a testament to his lasting impact on Rotterdam’s urban culture.
