ROTTERDAM, 20 April 2026 – The Rotterdam Bluegrass Academy returns as part of Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival 2026, giving musicians the chance to learn directly from international artists in the city. If you play, sing, write songs or simply want to get closer to the music, this is one of the most accessible ways to step into the festival instead of just watching from the crowd.
Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival is already one of the most distinctive fixtures on our summer calendar, but the academy adds something extra. Alongside the main festival at Noordplein from 3 to 5 July 2026, the Rotterdam Bluegrass Academy offers a programme of masterclasses and workshops led by artists from this year’s line-up.
What makes that especially interesting in Rotterdam is how international it feels. Many of the musicians teaching at the academy come from abroad, which means non-Dutch speakers do not need to see this as a side activity built only for locals. In practice, it is a rare chance to bring your own instrument, step into a room with touring professionals, and learn from artists whose musical roots stretch well beyond the Netherlands.
The academy programme is broad enough to welcome different kinds of players. There is a five-hour Bluegrass Bootcamp with the Henhouse Prowlers, a fiddle masterclass with Hillary Klug, a songwriting and poetry session with Kaia Kater, a beginner banjo workshop, a guitar session with Damn Tall Buildings, and a banjo masterclass with Enda Scahill. Some sessions are open to all levels, while others are aimed at intermediate players or complete beginners, depending on the workshop.

Why the academy stands out
For Rotterdam readers who already enjoy the festival atmosphere, this is the part where you can stop being a spectator for a moment. Instead of only catching a set at Noordplein, you can spend time in a smaller setting working on technique, rhythm, groove, harmony or songwriting with artists who do this professionally on international stages.
That matters even more in a city like ours, where international culture is part of daily life. If you are comfortable in English but less so in Dutch, the Rotterdam Bluegrass Academy feels like a natural fit. The teaching line-up includes artists with backgrounds in American old-time, bluegrass, Irish traditions and contemporary roots music, so the learning experience is shaped by a genuinely international mix of styles and perspectives.
Bring your instrument to Rotterdam
Several sessions specifically ask participants to bring their own instrument. Fiddle players should bring a fiddle, banjo players need their own banjo, and other instrumental workshops are designed around active participation rather than passive listening. That practical setup is part of the appeal. You are not just attending a cultural event, you are joining in.
The pricing also makes it fairly easy to enter at your own level. A full masterclass ticket costs €65, while a combined masterclass ticket plus festival pass costs €105. Individual sessions are also available, with prices listed separately on the festival website.

A smart extra for festival weekend
If you were already thinking of heading to Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival this July, the academy is worth a proper look. It turns a music weekend into something more hands-on, more social and more memorable, especially if you have been waiting for an excuse to dust off your banjo, mandolin, bass, fiddle or guitar and learn from musicians who have travelled here to play. How to get there
The academy sessions take place at Nivon Huis, just off the west side of the city centre, while the main festival takes place at Noordplein in Rotterdam Noord. For Nivon Huis, Rotterdam Centraal is the easiest major station if you are coming in by train, after which you can continue by tram, bike or a short taxi ride towards Nieuwe Binnenweg and the surrounding streets. If you are heading to the festival site itself, Noordplein is easiest from Rotterdam Noord station, with tram and bike both working well too.
