Pleinbioscoop Rotterdam off to a successful start

The 2018 edition of Pleinbioscoop (open-air cinema) kicked off last night in Rotterdam's Museumpark. The opening film, The Shape of Water, was attended by more than 2500 people.

Pleinbioscoop is a recurring event in August. The idea? Rent a chair or bring your own and watch a special selection of the best arthouse and Hollywood films from the past year. The event lasts the better part of a month and in addition to the main screenings, also features Dutch films, live music and surprises. The Pleinbioscoop screenings will last until 26 August.

Pleinbioscoop programme

A number of large audience favorites will be screened, such as the teen story Lady Bird, the romantic Call Me By Your Name and the moving Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Furthermore, action films such as Black Panther and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will also be shown on the big screen. International selections include the Australian film Sweet Country and the French-Lebanese The Insult.

Classics & Kid-friendly movies

Every year, the organizers choose two classics. This year the nostalgic family favorite Back to the Future (1985) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975), the masterpiece by director Miloš Forman who passed away earlier this year. Looking for something to watch with kids? There is also a children's programme. Children's films are shown in a special warehouse on the premises every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Don't forget to bring your camera! If you get eaten alive by a dinosaur, you will want to have proof, in case nobody believes you.

Jurassic Kingdom is all about fun, adventure and education. Next to all of the major dinosaurs, you'll find signs (in Dutch) with the name of the animal as well as an explanation of its physical features and place in history.

For the truly adventurous kids, there's a sandpit in which they can excavate dinosaur bones. There's also a tent in which a 30-minute BBC documentary is shown. If you're more hands-on, try out the virtual reality experience and start a fight with a dinosaur or take a ride on a wild dino-rollercoaster.

Among other things, sand-colored asphalt has been poured - a reference to the vowel floor that originally adorned the tunnel floor when it was was first opened in 1942.

About the Maastunnel renovation

Since the summer of 2017, the municipality of Rotterdam has been carrying out a large-scale renovation and restoration of the Maastunnel. In total this renovation will take two years. However, to keep the city as accessible as possible, one tunnel tube is always to remain open for traffic to Rotterdam Noord. Currently, that's the east tube. After the tunnel time trial, a 'tube switch' will take place. From then on, traffic will flow through the renovated west tube, while work will continue on the east tube. The direction of travel remains the same, so that Erasmus MC can always be reached quickly.

Once the car tunnel is completed in 2019, renovations will start on the bicycle and pedestrian tunnels.
