LEGO opens first Rotterdam store in the Koopgoot

ROTTERDAM, 26 March 2025 – The LEGO Group has opened its first store in Rotterdam, marking its fifth store in the Netherlands. The new shop in the Koopgoot adds another major retail name to the city centre and brings a dedicated LEGO destination to one of Rotterdam’s busiest shopping areas.

The store was officially opened by Dutch celebrity Nienke Plas and her daughter, who cut a red ribbon using oversized scissors made from LEGO bricks. With that, Rotterdam gained its first standalone LEGO store, aimed at fans of all ages looking for sets, loose bricks and hands-on building activities.

According to the LEGO Group, the store covers 250 square metres, giving visitors room to explore the full range of well-known LEGO sets as well as several exclusive releases. The opening also adds another experience-led retail concept to the Koopgoot, where brands are increasingly expected to offer more than shelves and a checkout.

What you will find inside

One of the clearest draws is the Pick a Brick wall, where visitors can buy individual bricks needed to finish their own builds. The store also includes a play table, the option to build your own minifigure, and a fresh stamp for LEGO passports.

The shop is also offering special gifts and gives LEGO Insiders members the chance to collect and spend points. Staff are on hand to help customers find the right set, whether they are shopping for themselves or buying for someone else.

Alongside the broader product range, the Rotterdam store includes exclusive sets such as LEGO Art Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies, the new LEGO Technic McLaren MCL39 F1 car, and the LEGO Speed Champions F1 ACADEMY LEGO race car.

A Rotterdam scene built from 89,136 bricks

The local showpiece inside the store is a custom wall installation inspired by Rotterdam itself. The decorative build features the Erasmus Bridge, the Cube Houses and the Port of Rotterdam, turning the city skyline into a large-scale LEGO display.

According to the press material, the work was built from 89,136 bricks and took more than 340 hours to complete. That local touch matters, because it helps the store feel less like a generic international branch and more like a shop made specifically for Rotterdam.

Why the Koopgoot matters here

Sarah Vehmeijer, senior asset manager at CBRE Investment Management, said the opening underlines the role of the Koopgoot as a central destination in Rotterdam. “The LEGO Store brings creativity, connection and experience together in a place where Rotterdammers have been coming for generations. With 30 years of history as a vibrant heart of the city centre, this opening shows how strong, experience-driven retail can enrich an area and keep it relevant. We are proud that the LEGO Group has chosen the Koopgoot and is helping strengthen the appeal and future of this unique place.”

The LEGO Group also says the Rotterdam store will host regular building events and workshops, adding a programming element beyond standard retail. That makes the opening feel less like a one-off launch and more like the start of an ongoing city-centre presence.
