The Grand Summer Hut brings playful art to Kunsthal

UNTIL 30 AUG | Rotterdam artist Teuntje Fleur has transformed the Kunsthal Auditorium into a colourful fantasy forest with The Grand Summer Hut. The interactive summer installation invites visitors to wander, play, build and pause inside the museum until 30 August.

The Auditorium stairs are now filled with bright sculptures, unusual viewing boxes and playful geometric shapes. Rather than asking you to observe everything from a respectful museum distance, the installation encourages you to explore and contribute to the landscape yourself.

A fantasy forest to explore

Colourful sculptures form a forest across the Auditorium, creating pathways you can wander through at your own pace. Curious viewing boxes reveal small discoveries along the route, adding an element of searching and finding to the experience.

Visitors can also use felt shapes to assemble their own sculptures for the fantasy forest. Circles, triangles and squares can be combined into new figures, allowing the installation to keep changing as different people add their ideas.

A hut outside everyday life

At the centre stands a large hut where you can read, play with other visitors or simply take a break. It provides a quieter space within the installation, with imagination, relaxation and spending time together taking priority.

The idea comes from huts Teuntje Fleur built during her childhood. She remembers them as places detached from everyday life, where time seemed to move differently and she could spend hours drawing or disappearing into her imagination.

Teuntje Fleur’s colourful world

Teuntje Fleur is a Rotterdam-based graphic artist known for compositions built from primary colours, playful patterns and recognisable geometric shapes. Her work explores how design and imagination can reconnect adults and children with a sense of curiosity.

In The Grand Summer Hut, simple forms become plants, characters and parts of an invented landscape. The installation remains accessible and playful, but also asks what happens when you allow yourself the time to look again and make something without worrying too much about getting it right.
