MAGURO KIWAMI brings live tuna ceremony to Rotterdam

HAPPENING 26 SEP '26 | A whole bluefin tuna weighing more than 100 kilograms will take centre stage at DINNERANT in Rotterdam-Zuid on Saturday 26 September during MAGURO KIWAMI. Japanese chef Yuki Azuma will break down the fish in front of guests before different cuts are incorporated into a five-course dinner, followed by live entertainment and an afterparty.

Bluefin tuna takes centre stage

MAGURO KIWAMI is built around a live tuna-cutting ceremony led by chef Yuki Azuma from Chiba, Japan. Guests will watch as he prepares a whole bluefin tuna weighing more than 100 kilograms while explaining the different cuts and techniques used.

Among the cuts are otoro, the particularly fatty belly meat, chutoro, which has a medium level of fat, and akami, the lean red meat found through much of the fish. The intention is to show how different parts of the same tuna can have noticeably different textures and flavours.

DINNERANT’s own description of MAGURO KIWAMI translates the name as the ‘ultimate tuna experience’: maguro means tuna in Japanese, while kiwami refers to an ultimate or refined form.

The ceremony is followed by a seated dinner in which cuts from the fish are incorporated into the evening’s menu.

Dinner continues beyond the ceremony

Guests are welcomed from 17:30, with the tuna ceremony and dinner beginning at 18:30. The evening starts with a signature oyster before moving into the five-course fine dining menu.

MAGURO KIWAMI is designed as an evening programme rather than a conventional restaurant sitting. Alongside the food, there will be a DJ, vocalists and a saxophonist, followed by an afterparty from 22:30.

The accompanying event material describes the format as a seated fine dining experience combining Japanese culinary techniques with music and nightlife. The flyer also positions the tuna ceremony as the centrepiece of all three announced editions.

Three editions planned in Rotterdam

The Signature Edition on 26 September is the first of three announced MAGURO KIWAMI evenings at DINNERANT in 2026.

A Halloween Edition follows on Saturday 31 October, with a Black Label Edition scheduled for Saturday 12 December. The organisers have not supplied further programme details for the later editions yet.

The series takes place at DINNERANT, a Japanese fusion restaurant and events venue on Laan op Zuid. The venue has two floors, its own bars and facilities for live entertainment, giving the dinner room to continue into a later evening programme.

Japanese craft meets Rotterdam nightlife

DINNERANT describes its wider food concept as Japanese fusion, combining Japanese techniques with influences from elsewhere. MAGURO KIWAMI takes that approach and builds an event around one ingredient, with the live preparation intended to show the craft involved before the tuna reaches the plate.

The September edition adds another layer with live music and an afterparty. It places the event somewhere between a chef-led culinary demonstration, a fine dining dinner and a night out in Rotterdam-Zuid.

A previous MAGURO KIWAMI edition can be seen on DINNERANT’s Instagram, while tickets and current booking information are available via DINNERANT.
