HAPPENING 16 June 2025 – Herring will be served at the Kralingse Plas this month during an annual gathering aimed at raising funds for cystic fibrosis research. Restaurant De Tuin and fishmonger Ruud den Haan will co-host the charitable event.
Herring and good company by the Kralingse Plas
On Monday 16 June 2025, Restaurant De Tuin will once again host its annual herring event, in collaboration with Rotterdamse Maatjes – a charitable initiative led by local fishmonger Ruud den Haan. The event will support Stichting Taai, a foundation committed to aiding people living with cystic fibrosis (taaislijmziekte).
Held along the Kralingse Plas waterfront, the gathering invites Rotterdammers to come together for an afternoon of socialising and freshly sliced Hollandse Nieuwe. For each herring consumed, a donation is made to support medical research and patient support initiatives led by Stichting Taai.
Restaurant owner Hendrik van der Wyck remarked: “The Haringparty is always a special moment for us. It brings people together through a deeply rooted Dutch tradition. You enjoy good company and food, and at the same time support a meaningful cause.”
Supporting cystic fibrosis research
Rotterdamse Maatjes and De Tuin aim to draw attention to the challenges faced by individuals living with cystic fibrosis, a hereditary disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. Despite ongoing research, a cure has yet to be found.
Christian den Haan of Rotterdamse Maatjes stated: “It’s heartening to see how an enjoyable afternoon like this can also have real impact. Stichting Taai is doing important work, and we are glad to contribute in any way we can.”
Tickets to the event can be purchased here.
