Barrio brings Latin American food and free music to Rotterdam's Schieblock

OPENING 14 NOV '26 | A new Latin American restaurant is coming to Rotterdam's Schieblock, and there's more on the menu than tacos and cocktails. Barrio opens on Saturday 14 November, combining food meant for sharing with live music, DJ sets and a free cultural programme that gives Rotterdam's creative community room to experiment.

ROTTERDAM, 23 October 2026 - The people behind Biergarten are opening a new restaurant in Rotterdam Central District. Barrio is the latest project from entrepreneurs Nikki van Dijk and Roeland Flierman, who have been part of the neighbourhood's hospitality scene for around fifteen years. Their new venture takes over a space in the Schieblock previously occupied by nightclub 160K, and before that, POING and BAR.

The idea is to create somewhere you can come for dinner without necessarily knowing how the rest of your evening will unfold. You might stay for another cocktail, discover a new DJ or find yourself watching a performance you hadn't planned on seeing. With its own stage and sound system, Barrio is designed to function as both a restaurant and a cultural meeting place.

Latin American food made for sharing

The kitchen is headed by chef Jossy Ricao, known from Taquería José y María. A summer pop-up collaboration with the taqueria helped shape the new restaurant, which takes inspiration from Latin American cooking and the tradition of gathering around the table.

At Barrio, sharing is central to the menu. Expect tacos, freshly prepared guacamole made at your table, pork neck, steak with chimichurri and chicken with mole, the rich Mexican sauce known for its complex combination of ingredients and flavours. A charcoal oven forms the heart of the kitchen, while the drinks menu includes Latin American-inspired cocktails such as micheladas, a Mexican beer-based drink typically prepared with lime and spices.

The surroundings are designed to feel lived-in rather than overly polished. Vintage crockery, antique cabinets, warm materials and candlelight bring colour and character to the Schieblock's industrial interior. Latin American influences appear throughout, creating a setting where an extended dinner with friends seems entirely appropriate.

Stay for the music, even without dinner

Music is intended to play a central role at Barrio, rather than simply providing background sound while you eat. A dedicated stage will host DJs, live performances, vinyl sessions and listening events, with programming that reaches beyond Latin American music into Rotterdam's wider creative scene.

Approximately twice a month, external programmers and collectives will be invited to develop their own evenings. The idea is to give local musicians, radio makers, artists and other creatives the opportunity to introduce audiences to their work, including more experimental and underground sounds.

Every Friday, the restaurant will host Barrio Friday, when dinner gradually gives way to music and cultural programming. Admission to the cultural programme is free, meaning you can also drop in for a drink and a DJ set without booking a table for dinner.

It's a welcome continuation of the Schieblock's relationship with music and nightlife. The space previously housed several Rotterdam club concepts, including BAR, POING and 160K, before the latter closed in May 2026. Barrio brings a different approach, with food and hospitality at the centre but plenty of room for the creative activity that has long characterised this part of the city.

From Biergarten to Barrio

For founders Nikki van Dijk and Roeland Flierman, Barrio is a continuation of their involvement in Rotterdam Central District rather than an attempt to recreate Biergarten indoors. The pair have spent roughly fifteen years working in the area and see the new restaurant as another way to contribute to its cultural life.

According to Van Dijk, the intention is to bring different people and ideas together, allowing Rotterdam's creative community to develop its own initiatives. Latin American culture provides the starting point, but the restaurant's identity will also be shaped by the musicians, artists and visitors who become part of it.

That makes Barrio an interesting addition to a neighbourhood that has experienced considerable change in recent years, including the closure of several familiar nightlife venues. Instead of another conventional restaurant or nightclub, the owners are trying to find a space somewhere between the two.
