ROTTERDAM, 14 February 2025 – Diergaarde Blijdorp introduces 'Expedition Blijdorp', an interactive experience that blends education with gamification. Visitors can explore the zoo in a new way through an app featuring challenges, stories, and tasks, both on-site and at home.
A new way to explore Blijdorp
Diergaarde Blijdorp has launched ‘Expedition Blijdorp’, the first interactive experience of its kind in a Dutch zoo. The initiative combines education with game elements, encouraging visitors to engage more deeply with the animals and their environment. Upon entering the zoo, visitors can access the app, which offers various routes, challenges, and activities that make the visit more dynamic.
Learning through play
Unlike a standard zoo visit, the app enhances the experience by incorporating digital challenges alongside real-life encounters with animals. Visitors can select an expedition that interests them and embark on an educational journey. By answering questions and completing challenges, they can collect badges, earn discounts, and unlock exclusive extras, such as accompanying zookeepers during their work.
Education at the core
Modern zoos increasingly prioritise education, helping visitors understand their role in protecting nature. ‘Expedition Blijdorp’ turns visitors into active explorers, introducing them to unique species and highlighting conservation efforts. The app offers personalised expeditions, encouraging users to progress through different levels—from ‘Explorer’ to ‘Enthusiast’ and ‘Expert’, ultimately reaching the status of ‘Protector’.
Continuing the adventure at home
The experience does not end at the zoo. Through the app, visitors can access exclusive content such as live webcam feeds and updates on conservation projects. They can also take part in hands-on activities, including building insect hotels or contributing to citizen science initiatives. This ensures that the expedition continues beyond the zoo visit.
Download the Blijdorp app
The Blijdorp app is available on both Google Play and the App Store. The default language is Dutch, but you can switch it to English by in the Account settings. Be sure to close and reopen the app for the language change to take effect.
