OPENING 28 OCT '26 | Popcorn has some serious competition at Pathé De Kuip. From Wednesday 28 October, cinema visitors in Rotterdam can buy a freshly prepared Smash burger and take it straight into the screening room. The new location from Rotterdam chef Diego Buik means you can now enjoy a proper burger while watching a film on the big screen.

ROTTERDAM, 28 October 2026 - Deciding between dinner and a film just became a little easier. Rotterdam burger concept Smash is opening its second location at Pathé De Kuip, where visitors are allowed to bring their freshly prepared burgers into the cinema auditorium. No more rushing through dinner before the trailers start. You can simply settle into your seat, unwrap your burger and enjoy the film.
The collaboration introduces a regular cinema dining option at Pathé De Kuip, which has installed a fully equipped kitchen so Smash can prepare its burgers on site. The restaurant opens on Wednesday 28 October.

From popcorn to a proper burger
Popcorn, nachos and soft drinks have traditionally dominated the cinema snack menu. But why stop there? With Smash moving into Pathé De Kuip, visitors can choose a freshly cooked burger rather than limiting themselves to the usual snacks.
The idea isn't entirely new to Rotterdam. Smash already operates a restaurant at Pathé Schouwburgplein, where visitors have been grabbing burgers before or after films since October 2024. In March 2026, Smash and Pathé also tested allowing visitors to take burgers into the screening rooms during a special weekend. The new location at De Kuip takes the concept a step further by making burgers during films a regular offering.
According to Pathé De Kuip theatre manager Rients Schipper, visitors increasingly want to combine a good film with a complete evening out. Bringing a Rotterdam burger restaurant into the cinema gives them another option for dinner without having to leave the building.
There is, of course, one question the organisers haven't addressed: whether the person sitting next to you will suddenly start craving a burger halfway through the film.

The Rotterdam chef behind Smash Burgers
Smash is the creation of Rotterdam chef and entrepreneur Diego Buik, also known for Diego's Burger Atelier. Buik has spent years building a reputation around hamburgers, earning the title of Rotterdam's Best Burger in 2015 and attracting international attention in 2017 with an extravagantly priced creation featuring ingredients such as gold leaf, caviar and lobster.
Smash takes a considerably more straightforward approach. The concept focuses on smash burgers, made by pressing beef onto a hot cooking surface to create a deeply browned crust while keeping the inside juicy. The burgers are served on freshly baked potato buns with house-made pickles, sauces and other toppings.
The menu includes the Classic and Signature burgers, with a choice of beef or vegetarian patties. Smash uses halal beef and offers fries, nuggets and other sides. Its signature burgers are currently listed at €11.95, with meal combinations available from €18.95.
With the new location at De Kuip, Smash now has two restaurants in Rotterdam, both connected to Pathé cinemas. The difference is that at De Kuip, the restaurant has been developed with the possibility of taking your meal into the cinema as part of the regular experience.
