ROTTERDAM, 31 August 2026 – The team behind Stooges’ smashburgers is getting into the sandwich business. From Wednesday 2 September, Jip Boon and Kick Vogel launch Sandwich Cult inside Stooges’ Funhouse on Goudsesingel, serving lunch three days a week before the space switches back to burgers, drinks and the usual Funhouse programme later in the day.

Sandwich Cult opens on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00 to 15:00. The menu moves between familiar sandwich classics and more elaborate combinations, including jambon-beurre, a hot chicken sandwich with miso-shiitake jus and a creation that brings together elements of a BLT, Caesar salad and cordon bleu.
From smashburgers to sandwiches
Boon and Vogel started Stooges’ at Station Bergweg in 2024, building a following around their smashburgers before opening the much larger Stooges’ Funhouse inside Het Industriegebouw in February 2026. The Goudsesingel location gave them a bar, courtyard and space for events, but it also created room to try concepts beyond burgers.
Sandwich Cult is the first clear example of that. Rather than adding a few lunch sandwiches to the existing Stooges’ menu, they are treating the daytime operation as a separate concept with its own identity.
“We want Stooges’ eventually to stand more for the quality of what we make than for one fixed dish,” Boon explains. The burgers remain part of Stooges’, but Sandwich Cult gives the pair a chance to apply the same approach to something completely different.
Vogel also sees lunch as a different eating occasion. People may not want a smashburger several times a week, but picking up a good sandwich during a workday is a considerably easier habit to develop, particularly around the offices and businesses of the city centre.

Classics get the Stooges’ treatment
The menu takes inspiration from the classical cooking experience Boon and Vogel brought from previous restaurants. Some sandwiches stay deliberately simple, including the French jambon-beurre built around bread, butter and ham.
Others take a less restrained route. One sandwich combines BLT, Caesar salad and cordon bleu influences, while the hot chicken sandwich comes with miso-shiitake jus. The idea is not to reinvent lunch beyond recognition, but to start with something familiar and push the ingredients and preparation further.
The bread has received similar attention. Instead of a heavy roll or thick slice of standard sourdough, Sandwich Cult uses an airy white sourdough somewhere between a Dutch sandwich loaf and Japanese shokupan: soft and fluffy, but sturdy enough to hold the fillings.
That approach fits the Stooges’ motto, Better than it needs to be. The Funhouse already says much of its food is made in-house, including sauces, while meats are selected for quality and some are smoked on its Traeger smoker.
Built for a quick Rotterdam lunch
Sandwich Cult is also designed differently from a leisurely restaurant lunch. Customers order and pay first, then either sit down or take their sandwich away.
That should make it useful if lunch means squeezing something good into a break rather than spending an hour and a half at a table. Orders can also be placed ahead for collection, whether that means one sandwich or a larger office order.
The arrangement effectively gives the Goudsesingel address two personalities during the second half of the week. Between 11:00 and 15:00, Sandwich Cult takes over. Later, the sandwiches make way and Stooges’ Funhouse returns with its smashburgers, bar and evening atmosphere.
For Boon and Vogel, that is part of the appeal rather than something that needs hiding. If the kitchen can make a strong burger and a strong sandwich, there is little reason the two need separate buildings.
