ROTTERDAM, 14 January 2025 – A new dining experience has opened its doors in Rotterdam’s iconic Zalmhaven. The restaurant and bar combine culinary innovation with a nod to one of the city’s literary connections.

A new dining destination, Celest, has officially opened in Rotterdam, occupying the 57th and 58th floors of the Zalmhaven Tower. Located 190 metres above the ground, the establishment includes a cocktail bar and a restaurant, offering a distinctive culinary experience inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s 1835 story, The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall. This tale tells of a Rotterdam resident who travels to the moon in a homemade balloon, considered one of the first works of science fiction.
The restaurant’s design, created by Doepel Strijkers architects, draws from the story’s themes of exploration and innovation. Key features include intimate dining pods called “moon pods” and a large, digitally rendered moon globe measuring 2.5 metres in diameter.

Culinary offerings
Led by head chef Lars Drost, previously associated with the two-Michelin-starred Ciel Bleu, Celest aims to merge local ingredients with international culinary techniques. “We collaborate closely with local fishermen, farmers, and producers to source the best seasonal products,” said Drost. The menu focuses on light and fresh dishes with unique flavour profiles.
Opening night
The grand opening event on 13 January featured a drone show that illuminated the Rotterdam skyline, showcasing the story and themes behind the venue. “It’s been months in the making, and it feels special to finally share this result with our guests and the city,” said Dennis Vermeulen, general manager of Celest.
The show, produced by Drone Stories, highlighted the connection between the restaurant’s theme and its sky-high location.

Celest is situated within the Zalmhaven Tower, the tallest structure in the Benelux region. Reservations and additional information about the restaurant and bar are available on their official website.
