ROTTERDAM, 23 May 2025 – A long-time volunteer in Overschie has received official recognition for her local efforts to combat poverty and social isolation.
Overschie volunteer honoured for anti-poverty work
Bibi Fazal, a resident of Overschie, has been presented with a €500 cheque by the Rotterdam municipality in recognition of her continued efforts to assist vulnerable neighbours. The acknowledgement was made by alderman Norville, who oversees the portfolios of Poverty Reduction, Debt Relief, Benefits and Language.
Fazal, who has been collecting groceries on a daily basis for years, received the award as part of a quarterly initiative by the city to spotlight residents contributing to the fight against poverty.
Supporting the community with food and essentials
Fazal organises the collection and distribution of food, clothing, toiletries and school supplies for those in need. She also provides free meals every Friday, with food prepared by students at the nearby Passer College. These meals are shared through the local Facebook group Overschie Leeft, and Fazal personally delivers them to those unable to leave their homes.
During holiday periods, her contributions increase. Last Christmas, she distributed 52 care packages to local residents.
Reducing loneliness through shared meals
In addition to tackling poverty, Fazal has made efforts to reduce social isolation in her community. Once a month, she hosts a free meal to encourage those who live alone to leave their homes and engage with others. What began with simple servings of soup and bread has developed into well-attended communal lunches that include full meals and social activities such as bingo.
Municipal support for local initiatives
The city of Rotterdam selects four residents each year for special recognition due to their grassroots involvement in poverty reduction. The aim is to acknowledge that lasting impact often starts with local engagement.
Alderman Norville stated: “I have a great deal of respect for those who dedicate themselves to helping others in their own neighbourhood. Combating poverty goes hand in hand with making meaningful connections—strong communities are vital to this.”
