HAPPENING 27 June 2026 | Huize Middelland celebrates its 10th anniversary on Saturday 27 June with a neighbourhood-wide birthday programme. The day starts with an international street party at Henegouwerplein, continues with a treasure hunt through Middelland and ends with a large neighbourhood picnic cooked by local neighbourhood chefs.
Huize Middelland is not one single neighbourhood house. It is a network of twelve very different places that together form the neighbourhood house (Huis van de Wijk) for Middelland.
Twelve places form one house
The story behind Huize Middelland is unusual. Ten years ago, active residents asked the municipality whether they could form the neighbourhood house together, not from one central building, but from several places already rooted in the area.
That idea became Huize Middelland. Today, the network includes the Spoortuin, Graaf Florisstraat, Henegouwerplein, Recreatiecentrum Oostervant, het Dierenlandje, Ettaouhid, het Wijkpaleis, Werkgroep Jongeren Middelland | de Fabriek, Thuis in West, de Oranjerie, het BuurtAtelier and Zorgvrijstaat.
Together, these places create a neighbourhood network for meeting, care, play, sport, making, cooking, gardening, language lessons, homework support and everyday contact. Some are social, some creative, some practical, some rooted in care or youth work.
That mix is exactly the point. Huize Middelland is built on self-organisation, community spirit and resident power, with each place keeping its own character while contributing to a shared neighbourhood structure.

Birthday party across Middelland
The anniversary programme takes place on Saturday 27 June. It begins with an international street party on the sports fields of Henegouwerplein, organised by Ettaouhid, from 09:00 to 14:00.
The morning programme includes children’s activities, food, drinks and a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere. It is aimed at residents and others connected to Middelland, with the sports fields acting as the starting point for the day.
From 13:00 to 17:00, there will be a Huize Middelland treasure hunt through the whole neighbourhood. You can pick up the route at one of the twelve Huize Middelland locations and follow it through Middelland.
The treasure hunt is a clever way to show what Huize Middelland actually is. Instead of pointing to one building, it sends you through the area to discover the different places that together make up the network.

Picnic for 250 Middellanders
The day ends back at the sports fields of Henegouwerplein with a large neighbourhood picnic from 17:30 to 20:00. The neighbourhood chefs of Huize Middelland will cook for 250 Middellanders.
Visitors are asked to bring their own picnic blanket, plate and cutlery. Tables will be available for people who cannot easily sit on the ground.

A neighbourhood model with staying power
Since 2016, Huize Middelland has received basic funding from the municipality, giving the twelve places stability while allowing them to keep developing in their own way.
The anniversary is therefore not only a party, but also a reminder of how a neighbourhood can organise itself when residents, local initiatives and community places work together. In Middelland, the house of the neighbourhood is not behind one front door. It is spread through the streets, exactly where people already meet, help, build and celebrate together.

How to get there
The anniversary programme starts and ends at the sports fields of Henegouwerplein in Middelland, close to Rotterdam-West and within reach of tram and metro stops around the Middelland, Nieuwe Westen and Central Station area. The treasure hunt takes place across all twelve Huize Middelland locations in the neighbourhood, so walking or cycling is the easiest way to take part.
