HAPPENING 20 SEP 2026 | The Rotterdam Half Marathon is officially returning. On Sunday 20 September 2026, runners will line up at Maassilo in Rotterdam-Zuid for a new edition of the city’s well-known 21.1 kilometre race.
After the event disappeared from the calendar for several years, the team behind Faive Running and Rotterdam Running Crew is bringing it back with a fresh concept rooted in the character of Zuid.
A new start and finish at maassilo
Maassilo sets the tone for the new Rotterdam Half Marathon. Its industrial character, central location in Zuid and convenient public transport links make it an ideal start and finish point. The choice moves the event away from the polished city centre and places it firmly within the raw, urban landscape that defines a large part of Rotterdam.
According to the organisers, this edition is shaped by a mix of experienced running professionals and younger creatives, who together want to restore the half-marathon in a way that feels contemporary and distinctly Rotterdam.
The 2026 course
The organisers have shared the outline of the route. Runners begin at Maassilo, move through the Maastunnel for cyclists, continue along wide harbour paths and loop around the surrounding port area before returning over the dike back to Zuid.
The course is expected to be fast and open, with long straight sections and minimal elevation changes. These conditions traditionally attract runners looking to set competitive times, but the setting also offers plenty of room for a relaxed, scenic run along the waterfront.
A cap of 5,000 runners
For the 2026 edition the limit is set at 5,000 participants. The organisers aim to build the event gradually rather than launch with a large-scale field. This controlled start helps ensure a smooth race experience and allows the team to shape the identity of the event without overwhelming the new setting.
The start time is 08:00, giving runners cool morning conditions and allowing the city to settle into its Sunday while the race unfolds.
Atmosphere and post-race plans
The Rotterdam Half Marathon positions itself as a modern alternative to the classic marathon experience in April. Instead of the usual fries and beer at the finish, the team is planning healthier food options such as wraps and poke bowls. Non-alcoholic drinks will also be part of the offering. The organisers emphasise that the finish area should feel like a place to linger and celebrate rather than a quick exit point.
Background and short history
The Rotterdam Half Marathon originally took place from 2004 to 2009, starting and finishing on the Coolsingel. A later edition was organised in 2022, alongside the World Police and Fire Games, but the event did not continue in subsequent years. The 2026 relaunch marks the start of a new phase, with a new course, new organisers and a clear focus on atmosphere and accessibility.
Practical information
Key details still to come include the full course map, registration fees, pacers and information about water stations or time limits. These will be announced once registration opens.
