HAPPENING 28 September 2024 | Residents of Rotterdam are invited to explore an asylum centre in their neighbourhood during Open azc Day. Various locations across the Netherlands, including Schiehaven 27 in Rotterdam, will open their doors to the public.
Open azc day offers insight into daily life at asylum centres
The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), the Repatriation and Departure Service (DTenV), and Refugee Council Netherlands (VluchtelingenWerk) will welcome visitors to their annual event, coinciding with National Neighbour Day. The initiative allows the public to observe life within an asylum reception centre and interact with both staff and residents.
From 13:00 to 16:00, more than 100 locations throughout the country will participate in the event. In Rotterdam, the asylum reception centre at Schiehaven 27 will be open for visitors.
A range of activities and interactions
Visitors can take part in various activities during the Open azc Day, such as guided tours, workshops, and activities for children. Staff and residents will be on hand to share their experiences and discuss their daily routines, including how they become familiar with Dutch culture and language.
Since 2015, COA, IND, DTenV, and VluchtelingenWerk have organised this Open Day event to provide the public with a closer look at the operations of an asylum centre. This initiative continues even as the asylum system faces challenges, such as a shortage of sustainable reception facilities and reliance on temporary emergency shelters. The event emphasises the importance of connections between refugees, staff, and local communities.
Asylum procedure and services
In the Netherlands, those seeking asylum are provided with shelter and support by the COA until they receive a residence permit or must leave the country. The IND is responsible for deciding on asylum applications, while the Repatriation and Departure Service aids those returning to their country of origin. The Refugee Council Netherlands provides personal support during the asylum process.
