ROTTERDAM, 16 April 2025 – A long-anticipated redesign of the Brinkplein and surrounding streets in Hoek van Holland is moving forward, with the municipality confirming the final design and a construction start date later this year.
Brinkplein in Hoek van Holland set for green transformation
A comprehensive redevelopment of the village centre in Hoek van Holland has been confirmed by the City of Rotterdam. The Brinkplein, along with Rietdijkstraat and Prins Hendrikstraat, is set to be overhauled following years of planning and public consultation.
Focus on greenery and local character
According to the municipality, the current condition of the public space had deteriorated, prompting the need for renewal. In 2022, the municipal executive approved a so-called 'Ambitiedocument', which initiated the development of a detailed spatial plan (Inrichtingsplan). That plan has now been finalised and preparations for construction are underway.
The new layout responds to a widely supported wish among locals to create a “green oasis” (groene oase) in the heart of the village. As part of this, 2,903 square metres of green space will be added and 80 new trees will be planted.
A new role for the village square
The redesigned Brinkplein will feature a central oval seating edge, surrounded by shrubs and trees. A notable feature will be the 'Scheepsduin' – a partially sunken play and meeting object shaped like a ship. It was designed in collaboration with Arttenders, artist Marjan Laaper, and residents, with guidance from Helma Vlemmings.
The layout prioritises pedestrians and cyclists. While vehicle access will be limited in collaboration with local businesses, the village centre will remain accessible. Parking will continue to be free of charge. The square will retain sufficient space for village events and the weekly market.

Quotes from city officials
Alderman Robert Simons, responsible for small communities, commented: “With this plan, Hoek van Holland will finally have the green and lively village heart it has long awaited. It enhances the liveability of the village with a square that encourages people to stay and meet.”
Alderman Pascal Lansink-Bastemeijer, responsible for public space, added: “I’m pleased we can now realise this long-held wish of the people of Hoek van Holland. The Brinkplein will once again become the vibrant centre of the village.”
Construction begins in October 2025
Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2025, carried out by contractor KWS on behalf of the City of Rotterdam. The works will be carried out using emission-free methods to protect nearby sensitive nature areas and to reduce air pollution around the site.
Funding comes from various sources, including the Programme for Small Communities (Programma Kleine Kernen), the city’s green initiative 'Rotterdam Gaat voor Groen', and maintenance budgets linked to the project. Additional support is being provided by the Port Environment Fund (Havenomgevingsfonds).
