ROTTERDAM, 15 May 2026 – Rotterdam’s new international cricket franchise has officially been launched under the name Rotterdam Dockers. The team will represent the city in the European T20 Premier League, Europe’s first ICC-sanctioned T20 competition, which starts in August 2026.

The name was unveiled in Rotterdam on Wednesday 13 May, giving the city its own place in a new European cricket competition with international ambitions. The Rotterdam franchise is backed by major names from the cricket world, including Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen as co-owners.
Rotterdam Dockers joins Europe
The European T20 Premier League brings city-based teams from different European countries into one franchise competition. For Rotterdam, the arrival of Rotterdam Dockers gives the city a new sporting connection to cricket markets with large audiences in India, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe.
The Netherlands will be represented by two teams in the league. Rotterdam Dockers now becomes one of the city names carrying Dutch cricket into that wider European format.

Cricket meets Rotterdam identity
The Rotterdam Dockers name leans directly into the city’s port identity. It is not subtle, and honestly, it does not need to be. If a Rotterdam team is going international, a name connected to docks, trade and hard work makes sense.
The franchise presents Rotterdam as a natural meeting point for sport, entrepreneurship and international cooperation. With its port, trading links and growing South Asian community, the city is being positioned as a bridge between the Netherlands, India and South Africa.
International names back team
Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen bring immediate visibility to the new franchise. Their involvement gives Rotterdam Dockers a recognisable profile in cricket circles before the team has even played its first match.
That matters because cricket is still a niche sport for many people in Rotterdam, even though globally it is one of the biggest sports in the world. For fans from cricket-loving communities in the city, this launch could feel like Rotterdam finally joining a conversation that has been huge elsewhere for a very long time.
Local roots matter too
The ambition is not only international exposure. Rotterdam Dockers also wants to build local relevance, with links between sport clubs, businesses, communities and young talent.
During the Rotterdam visit, the delegation visited sporting and business locations in the city. The programme included meetings with sports organisations, a business gathering, a youth clinic and a B2B event.

Youth clinic brings cricket closer
A clinic for Rotterdam children formed part of the launch visit. That is a smart move, because a franchise only becomes meaningful locally if young players can actually see, try and recognise the sport.
For Rotterdam, this could be where the story becomes more than a logo and a competition. If Rotterdam Dockers can connect international cricket with local clubs and youth programmes, the franchise may help cricket grow in the city rather than simply passing through it.

Business links take shape
The franchise also sees opportunities beyond the pitch. These include sponsor activations, business events, trade relationships and new links between companies connected to the Netherlands, India and South Africa.
That “cricket meets business” angle fits Rotterdam well. This is a city where sport, port activity, migration, entrepreneurship and international networks already overlap. Cricket may be the new part of the story, but the wider logic is very Rotterdam.
European T20 starts in August
The European T20 Premier League begins in August 2026 and aims to become a platform for sport, media, talent development and international business opportunities. Rotterdam Dockers will be part of that first season.
The challenge now is to turn launch-day attention into something lasting. A strong name helps. International co-owners help. But the real test will be whether Rotterdam Dockers can become visible, accessible and relevant in the city itself.

Rotterdam gains a global sports link
For Rotterdam, the launch adds a new global sports story to the city. Football will not be losing sleep, obviously, but cricket brings a different audience, a different business network and a different cultural connection.
If the franchise builds well, Rotterdam Dockers could become a useful bridge between local talent, international sport and the communities that already follow cricket passionately. Not bad for a city that has always known how to turn docks into dreams.
