ROTTERDAM, 4 September 2026 – Bar Tij has opened a new restaurant and bar on Rotterdam’s Noordereiland, bringing an all-day dining concept to Maaskade overlooking the Maas. Created by Rotterdam hospitality entrepreneurs Xander Olthof and Cornelis Kleinjan, the venue serves coffee, lunch, drinks and dinner in a restored waterfront setting.
An all-day spot on Noordereiland
Bar Tij is located at Maaskade 73 and is designed as a place you can visit throughout the day, from morning coffee and lunch to after-work drinks and dinner. Olthof and Kleinjan want the venue to work as an informal meeting place for the Noordereiland neighbourhood as well as a destination from elsewhere in Rotterdam.
“We wanted to create a place where people immediately feel welcome,” says Kleinjan. “A kind of living room for Noordereiland, where you don’t just come to eat and drink, but also to stay a while, meet people and become part of the atmosphere.”
The waterfront location combines views across the Maas with a terrace and an indoor restaurant, giving Bar Tij space to operate beyond Rotterdam’s sunnier days. The entrepreneurs see the restaurant’s position between the city centre and the quieter atmosphere of Noordereiland as an important part of its identity.

Seafood and drinks lead menu
Seafood has a prominent place on the Bar Tij menu. Dishes mentioned at launch include sea bass, lobster rolls served on brioche and lobster bisque.
The bar menu includes oysters, padrón peppers and calamari, accompanied by a selection of wines. Beer is available on draught alongside several speciality beers.
The idea is to keep the menu approachable while putting more attention into ingredients and preparation than you might expect from a straightforward neighbourhood bar.

Interiors reference Rotterdam’s waterfront
Inside, Bar Tij combines wood, steel and exposed brick, materials chosen in reference to the maritime history of the location. Original architectural details and high ceilings have been paired with a Patagonia marble bar, which forms one of the centrepieces of the restaurant.
The new interior marks a substantial change for the property, creating a restaurant and bar intended to function from daytime into the evening rather than around a single dining moment.

Plans extend onto the water
Part of the location’s potential lies outside the restaurant itself. Bar Tij is connected with the former bridgehead of the First Willemsbrug (Bruggenhoofd 1e Willemsbrug), a structure on the water opposite the venue. The spot was previously associated with pop-up restaurant A La Plancha.
Olthof and Kleinjan plan to make greater use of this waterside area, with ideas including lighting, events, themed evenings and collaborations. Details of these plans have yet to be announced.
“Some places immediately have something special,” says Olthof. “This location has that feeling: you’re right in the middle of Rotterdam, but because of the water and the space, it feels like you’ve briefly escaped.”
