Rotterdam launches new electric mobile hub for residents

ROTTERDAM, 9 October 2024 – A new step in Rotterdam's green transition has been taken as the municipality launches its fully electric mobile hub, aimed at enhancing accessibility and services for residents. This new initiative is a significant part of the city's strategy to make its fleet completely emission-free.

Electric mobile hub launched in Rotterdam

Alderman Robert Simons has officially launched a new mobile neighbourhood hub (wijkhub) that is fully electric. This new bus, introduced by the municipality of Rotterdam, is part of the city's broader initiative to make its fleet completely emission-free in the coming years. As Simons explained during the launch, the mobile hub will allow the municipality to bring its services directly to residents in a sustainable and quiet way.

"The mobile hub allows us to literally bring the municipality to Rotterdammers, and now, we do it in a way that is clean, quiet, and sustainable. It's a positive step forward," said Simons.

A hub for year-round community services

The official unveiling of the electric bus took place at Maltaplein in Nesselande, where a demonstration of its various features was provided. Designed to operate year-round, the bus is equipped with several facilities, including space for personal meetings with residents, digital presentations, and the ability to host community activities, regardless of weather conditions.

The mobile hub complements the existing network of fixed hubs in Rotterdam and aims to improve the municipality's accessibility. By being present in strategic locations across the city, the hub makes it easier for residents and local entrepreneurs to ask questions, express concerns, or engage in discussions with municipal employees.

Supporting the city's zero-emission goals

Rotterdam's mobile hub also supports the city's broader goals for a cleaner and healthier urban environment. The municipality has been working toward introducing a zero-emission zone in the city, with the goal of making its entire fleet emission-free by 2030. The electric mobile hub is a direct contribution to this vision, as it helps reduce emissions while continuing to provide essential services to the community.
