HAPPENING 19 DEC 2025–3 JAN 2026 | This winter, Diergaarde Blijdorp — Rotterdam Zoo — transforms once again into a glowing winter wonderland. Between 12 December 2025 and 18 January 2026, parts of the park will come alive after dark with sparkling lights, immersive soundscapes, and seasonal cheer. Under the theme “Winterse Verwondering” (Winter Wonder), the zoo invites visitors to experience nature in a whole new light.
A glowing journey through Blijdorp
On select evenings — 19, 20, 26 and 27 December, and 2 and 3 January — the zoo opens its gates for a special evening programme from 18:00 to 21:00. Visitors can stroll along the polar bear route, where the icy glow and frosty atmosphere evoke the Arctic Circle, and learn about the resilient wildlife that calls it home.
Further into the park lies the Magical Forest, a softly illuminated world where lights, projections, and ambient sound bring nature’s stories to life. Expect interactive displays, playful light creatures, and installations designed to delight both children and adults.
Warm up at the Winterplein
After exploring the illuminated paths, guests can unwind at the Winterplein, the heart of Blijdorp’s winter festivities. Here, visitors can enjoy:
- A cosy outdoor café with hot chocolate, mulled wine, and seasonal treats.
- Winter workshops and family activities in a festive setting.
- A large ice-skating rink, where visitors of all ages can glide together under twinkling lights.
The Winterplein combines festive atmosphere with Blijdorp’s familiar charm — families gather by fire pits, children skate and laugh, and music fills the crisp winter air.
Educational wonder and sustainability
“Winterse Verwondering” isn’t only about lights and leisure — it’s also a celebration of nature’s resilience in winter. The themed routes highlight the survival strategies of Arctic animals and the importance of conservation in fragile ecosystems. As part of Blijdorp’s commitment to sustainability, many light installations use low-energy LEDs, and food stands feature locally sourced and eco-friendly products.

Tickets for “Winterse Verwondering” are available via the official website. The event requires a separate evening ticket, which can be purchased online in advance. Regular daytime admission does not include access to the evening programme.
