WASUI opens flagship matcha café in Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM, 2 October 2026 – Japanese matcha brand WASUI has opened its flagship café and store on Nieuwe Binnenweg, bringing first-harvest, single-origin matcha and an interactive tea experience to Rotterdam. The new space opened on 11 September and combines a café, retail collection and interior design by Italian-Japanese studio mist-o.

Matcha takes centre stage

WASUI's Rotterdam flagship focuses on Japanese first-harvest, single-origin matcha, with an emphasis on organic selections. Rather than treating matcha as simply another café flavour, the recipes are designed around the character of the individual tea.

The menu includes the brand's signature matcha and matcha latte, botanical and coconut variations and a matcha affogato. Visitors can also buy single-origin matcha and teaware from the store.

One of the more unusual elements is the preparation itself. Guests can put on headphones, listen while preparing the drink and whisk their own matcha before the WASUI team finishes it. The idea combines flavour, sound and movement with elements of Japanese tea culture in a contemporary café setting.

Japanese and Italian design meet in Rotterdam

The interior was created by mist-o, an Italian-Japanese design studio founded in Milan in 2012 by Tommaso Nani and Noa Ikeuchi. The studio works across Tokyo, Milan and Copenhagen, combining Japanese simplicity with an Italian approach to materials across interiors, furniture and product design.

WASUI Rotterdam also features straw craft by Straft, a Tokyo-based Japanese craft design unit. These handmade pieces add another Japanese craft element to the café alongside mist-o's interior design.

The photograph included with the press material shows a deliberately minimal interior, with light wood, pale walls and individual matcha preparation stations beneath hanging headphones. The result feels closer to a small tea studio than a conventional grab-and-go café.
