Museum Rotterdam opens dog-friendly visiting days

ROTTERDAM, 30 October 2024 – Museum Rotterdam has opened its doors to canine companions with monthly dog-friendly visiting days. This initiative allows pet owners to explore the museum's exhibits with their dogs in tow, offering an inclusive experience for all family members.

Museum Rotterdam opens doors to dogs

Museum Rotterdam has introduced a new initiative allowing pet owners to bring their dogs along to monthly dog-friendly visiting days. Starting on Sunday, 24 November 2024, visitors can attend with their leashed pets to explore the exhibitions, creating a unique outing for both humans and their dogs. These dog-friendly days are scheduled once a month, enabling more flexibility for dog owners looking to enjoy the museum experience.

Dog-friendly amenities and guidelines

During the designated dog-friendly days, Museum Rotterdam will provide specific amenities to cater to dogs of all types and sizes. Water bowls and dog snacks will be available throughout the museum, and staff trained in animal behaviour will be present to assist with any questions or help. However, certain guidelines must be followed to ensure a smooth experience for all guests. Dogs are required to remain on a leash, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets if necessary. In addition, owners are advised to assess whether their dog is comfortable with the environment, as the museum may contain dark rooms, sound effects, and the presence of other dogs.

Regular visitors are also welcome on these dog-friendly days but should be prepared to share the space with leashed dogs accompanying their owners.

Expanding accessibility for dog owners

Museum Rotterdam recognises the challenge faced by dog owners seeking pet-friendly activities, as dogs are often not allowed in public venues like museums, cafés, or hotels. With this new initiative, the museum aims to offer dog owners an accessible cultural experience. Following their museum visit, guests can enjoy a walk along the nearby Coolhaven, where the cityscape offers scenic views often likened to ‘Manhattan on the Maas.’

Leontine Meijer van Mensch, Museum Rotterdam’s director, stated, “We want to make the museum accessible to everyone, including those with dogs. After an inspiring visit, people can also enjoy a walk outdoors and discover more of the city.”

The museum has announced the following dates for upcoming dog-friendly visits:

  • Sunday, 24 November 2024
  • Sunday, 22 December 2024
  • Sunday, 19 January 2025
  • Sunday, 16 February 2025
