Rotterdam's OBJECT design fair moves to new city centre venue

ROTTERDAM, 25 October 2024 – The annual Rotterdam design fair OBJECT will relocate to the heart of the city in February, marking a change to AIR, the former V&D building near the Koopgoot. Attendees can expect unique design showcases over three levels of this distinctive space.

OBJECT Rotterdam relocates to AIR in central Rotterdam

The well-known Rotterdam design fair, OBJECT, is set to return from 14 to 16 February 2025 in a fresh, city-centre location: AIR. This site, formerly home to V&D and Hudson's Bay, will provide nearly 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, incorporating an open and transparent layout that offers views across Rotterdam's bustling inner city. This move follows years at the HAKA building and reflects the fair's ongoing pursuit of dynamic, accessible locations that match its commitment to contemporary design.

Showcasing international and local talent

At the upcoming edition, visitors will encounter works by over 100 designers from Rotterdam and beyond, showcasing items spanning various styles and cultural origins. This international presence highlights contributions from across Europe, Asia, and Africa, while local talents will also have a prominent showing. As a pop-up event, OBJECT aims to connect the city’s creative community with residents and visitors, providing a platform for attendees to explore, appreciate, and purchase new designs directly from the creators.

The significance of the AIR building

Located in Rotterdam’s vibrant shopping district, AIR offers a historical yet modern backdrop for OBJECT. Originally designed in 1947 by Kraaijvanger Architects, this building has long been part of the city’s architectural identity, initially functioning as a department store. Recently, AIR underwent a significant transformation led by WOMO Architects and is now a mixed-use space that includes retail outlets and workspaces. This venue’s redesign aligns with OBJECT’s emphasis on innovation and sustainability within design.

“Bringing OBJECT to the city centre is an exciting opportunity to engage a diverse audience in a vibrant setting,” says director Anne van der Zwaag. “The energy and variety of this location resonate with our mission to keep OBJECT constantly evolving and accessible.”
