Rotterdam bartender wins Bobby's National Cocktail prize

On 21 September, Bobby's Dry Gin organized the second edition of Bobby's National Cocktail Competition. Ten of The Netherlands' best bartenders gathered in Schiedam to present their most special cocktail to the jury. Alex Danger of cocktail bar Mavis took the win with his 'Bobby's Sly Grin.'

Bobby's National Cocktail Competition

Ten participants competed for the coveted title on Monday 21 September. They were selected from over thirty applications. To participate, they had to share their signature cocktail on Instagram. The final was organized in cocktail bar 1714 in Schiedam, the gin capital of the Netherlands.

The following participants took a shot at the title by shaking and presenting their most special Bobby's cocktail on the spot:
• Ziggy Zygimantas Valiulis of Vandal Rotterdam
• Laura Klimaite from Flying Dutchmen Cocktails in Amsterdam
• Oliver Youngman of Mr Mofongo in Groningen
• Tamas Palanovics from Leonardo Royal Hotel in Amsterdam
• Alex Danger from Mavis in Rotterdam
• Cecile of Flying Dutchmen Cocktails in Amsterdam
• Manolis Anastasiou of The Stockroom in Groningen
• Owen Smith of The Gyros Club in The Hague
• Wouter Saarloos of 1714 in Schiedam
• Bobby Patik of The Five Points Bar in The Hague

And the winner is...

The competition was won by Alex Danger, bartender at Mavis in Rotterdam. The bartender won with his Bobby's Sly Grin: a sour cocktail with Bobby's Gin, lemon, egg yolk, prosecco, cucumber water and salt and pepper. The three-man professional jury consisted of Erik Beeftink (winner of the national and international competition 2019), Ad van der Lee (master distiller by Herman Jansen) and Timo Jansen (renowned bartender, also known from cocktail bar Flying Dutchmen). Consideration was given to originality, presentation, taste balance and the story behind the cocktail. The jury found Alex Danger to be the right winner because of his strong presentation with a good story. In addition, his cocktail has the perfect taste balance, according to the jury.

International finals

Alex Danger did not go home empty-handed. He won - besides eternal fame - a qualification ticket for the international finals of Bobby's Cocktail Competition. In January, the best bartenders from all over Europe compete against each other. The lucky winner of the international competition will receive a ticket for the bar & spirits trade fair Bar Convent Berlin in Germany. Here he or she can present the winning cocktail to the entire cocktail industry and take part in a special guest shift at one of Berlin's leading cocktail bars; a unique opportunity to meet all global importers. In addition, the winner will be the guest of honour during the Bobby's Family Dinner.

Bobby's Sly Grin

"I really didn't expect to win and of course I'm super happy," says Alex Danger (@dangerousdrinks on Instagram). "But frankly, I'm also quite nervous. It's not nothing, that I'm allowed to represent the Netherlands in the international competition. I find it very exciting, but I'm also really looking forward to it!

Alex Danger's cocktail was inspired by one of the rules of the competition: the participants were only allowed to use ingredients (besides Bobby's Gin or Jenever) that are available in the supermarket. "I've liked shopping since I was a little boy and for this competition I was able to get creative with it. This rule ensures that everyone can make my cocktail at home and I really like that".

His cocktail Bobby's Sly Grin owes its name to Alex's fiancée. "She tastes all my creations at home and when she took a sip of this cocktail, she immediately got a mysterious grin on her face.

Rotterdam Philharmonic and Feyenoord create video production

Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Feyenoord open cultural and football season with joint video production. The two 'teams' join forces to bring the world of football and classical music together in a special video production.

For six months, the orchestra and the football club were unable to play for their audiences and supporters. Now the Rotterdam orchestra and football club Feyenoord are giving shape to the return to the concert halls and on the football fields with the message: "Ready to play".

In their video, the teams play together - each in their own habitat - and present the players to the public for the new season.

Feyenoord managing director Mark Koevermans: "The crisis is not over yet, but with the start of the league, millions of football fans will have something to look forward to every week. On the eve of what will hopefully be another great season for Feyenoord, we and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra - as another icon of Rotterdam - have wanted to reflect on this in this special way".

Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra George Wiegel: "As valuable as it was, recently, that we were able to keep in shape with online projects and reach music lovers all over the world, there is nothing like playing live. We have had a lot of support from our fans' heart-warming reactions and can't wait to welcome them back to our venue".

Depot Museum Boijmans van Beuningen wins Rooftop Award 2020

Depot Museum Boijmans van Beuningen wins Rooftop Award 2020

The roof forest of the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen was awarded the Rooftop Award 2020 on Friday 4 September during the Rooftop Symposium in Capital C in Amsterdam. Sjarel Ex, director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Arjen Ketting, associate and architect MVRDV, and Michiel van de Bunt, manager at ZinCo Benelux, received the Rooftop Award from DakenDiva Esther Wienese.

Roof innovators

Rooftop Revolution, the organizer of the symposium and booster of the sustainable use of our roof landscape, wants to use the Rooftop Award to give ambitious 'roof innovators' a stage and show that there is much more that can be done on our roofs. The roof forest at the depot is a wonderful example of this. It was designed by MVRDV in collaboration with MTD Landschapsarchitecten.

Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV: 'Roofs are very important in our designs. We make them accessible as gardens, woods or event grounds. The depot is a special case; it has a clear public function and is located in Rotterdam's Museumpark, which we didn't want to affect too much. We solved that by moving the park to a height of 35 meters'.

Green in the city

Adding nature to the city is the mission of rooftop Revolution. And according to Maas it is also of great importance: 'Especially to give people extra places where they can literally breathe. According to him, the award-winning depot is 'a piece of "jungle" where people can enjoy the forest and the spectacular views'. Museum director Sjarel Ex says about the award: 'It's great to win this prize together. And I think it's fantastic that, together with the City of Rotterdam, we can make the city's collection accessible to the public in this way. With the added value of a panoramic roof with restaurants and nature!

Ambition, creativity and guts

The depot is a special example of guts, creativity and a turnaround in thinking about roofs', says Jan Henk Tigelaar, director of Rooftop Revolution. We've received wonderful entries, all inspiring projects that deserve to be highlighted, but I understand that the jury couldn't ignore this icon.

Michiel van de Bunt, of consultant ZinCo Benelux, was the one who submitted the rooftop forest for the Rooftop Award: 'ZinCo was involved as one of the partners in the realization of this project, and I am very honoured to receive the Rooftop Award. He adds: 'The profit confirms what can be achieved when you work together with a team of ambitious people'.

Jury

Margot Bleeker, director Erasmus MC Trust Fund and involved with the winner of 2018, Tim van Hattum, program leader Green Climate Solutions at Wageningen University Research, and DakenDiva Esther Wienese, author of Het Rotterdamse Dakenboek, had the honour to choose the winner from the seven nominees.

They judged the entries on the following criteria: Innovation, Inspiration, Public Accessibility, Visibility, Sustainability and Green and the State of the Roof now, and almost unanimously chose the depot as the winner.

Esther Wienese: 'This year's Rooftop Award was for 'the most eye-catching roof in the Netherlands'. That's Depot. The trees on the roof of the reflecting 'pot' draw attention to themselves. This means this building has everything to make people aware and inspire them to do more with their roof'.

Nominees

The art depot in Rotterdam's Museumpark was one of a total of seven nominated roofs. All make a sustainable contribution to their surroundings, are innovative and a feast for the eye:
• Capital C, Amsterdam (monumental roof)
• De Peperklip, Rotterdam (nature roof)
• Depot Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (roof park)
• The Court of Cartesius, Utrecht (business and nursery roof)
• Childcare center Zanddonk, Waalwijk (roof of childcare)
• PLNT, The Roof, Leiden (innovative and multifunctional roof)
• Triodos Bank, Driebergen (business roof)

Depot Boijmans van Beuningen is a collaboration between Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Municipality of Rotterdam and Stichting de Verre Bergen. The depot was designed by the architectural firm MVRDV and built by BAM Bouw en Techniek.

Fenix I in Rotterdam nominated for Dutch architecture award

Fenix I in Rotterdam nominated for Dutch architecture award

The Fenix I building in Rotterdam has been nominated for the prestigious BNA Building Of The Year Award 2020. Located in Rotterdam's Katendrecht area, Fenix I is an iconic multi-use building designed by Mei architects and planners.

On 22 October, the jury will announce which building will succeed the North/South Line as BNA Best Building of the Year, in other words: the building with the most added value for people and society. The jury will also announce the four category winners, the public's favourite and will award Honorary Mentions to 2 (non-nominated) buildings.

Fenix I

With 45,000m2 of mixed-use space, a unique building has been erected on Katendrecht. On top of the 100-year-old monumental Fenixloods a new structure has been built with 212 loft residences. This makes Phoenix I stand out technically, the loft concept is exceptional on this scale and architecturally, Fenix I is an iconic icon for Rotterdam.

In the past, Katendrecht had a very poor image, which meant that there was a clear reason to achieve successful area development. Cultural parties played a key role in the development of Katendrecht, particularly in lowering the threshold for visitors to rediscover the district. In the time between research, design and actual construction of Phoenix I, temporary initiatives brought liveliness to the area, as a result of which its dangerous and seedy image gave way to hotspots, hip entertainment and visitors-turned-ambassadors.

In addition to freely combinable loft flats in various price categories, the Phoenix I now includes Cultural, Culinary and Creative users. There's a Bed and Breakfast and the building's tenants include Codarts (college for circus artists), Rotjeknor (children's circus with around 340 active children) and Conny Janssen Danst (world-renowned dance company for modern dance).
