HAPPENING 28 OCT '26 | Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy classic Pan’s Labyrinth comes to Wereldmuseum Rotterdam on Wednesday 28 October for a special screening organised with Roffa Mon Amour. The evening pairs the film with Live the Surreal, including an optional guided exhibition tour before the film and the original Spanish-language version with English subtitles.
Film and exhibition meet at Wereldmuseum
Released in 2006, Pan’s Labyrinth celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The story unfolds in Francoist Spain in 1944, where young Ofelia moves into the home of her violent stepfather, a captain serving the fascist regime. Faced with the brutality surrounding her, she discovers a hidden fantasy world and encounters a mysterious faun who gives her three dangerous tasks.
Del Toro blends fairy-tale imagery with the realities of political violence, making imagination much more than an escape. In Ofelia’s world, fantasy becomes a way of confronting oppression and keeping the possibility of something better alive.
That is also what connects the film to Live the Surreal, the current exhibition at Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. Rather than presenting Surrealism as a movement belonging mainly to twentieth-century Europe, the exhibition approaches it as a global artistic and activist mindset built around dreams, imagination, resistance and the refusal to simply accept reality as it is.

Take a slightly spooky museum tour
The evening starts at 19:00, when Live the Surreal opens to film visitors. At 19:10, museum educators lead special 20-minute tours through the exhibition before the screening begins.
These tours lean into the slightly eerie mood of the night, asking you to slow down, examine artworks more closely and speculate about what they might be telling you. The exhibition itself contains 90 works by 44 artists from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America and Oceania, including international loans and works by Rotterdam-based artists.
The film begins at 20:00 and the programme ends at approximately 22:15. Drinks and popcorn will be available at the museum.

How to get there
The screening takes place at Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, Willemskade 25, 3016 DM Rotterdam, in the Scheepvaartkwartier. From Rotterdam Centraal, tram 8 stops at Vasteland, followed by a short walk towards the Maas. Tram 3, tram 5 and the metro stop at Leuvehaven.
