Dutch Doom Days XXIV: Day 1

Description

Dutch Doom Days returns to Baroeg in Rotterdam for its 24th edition on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026. The opening day brings together six bands from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, led by British doom metal pioneers Pagan Altar. Expect crushing riffs, slow-burning melodies and atmospheric performances celebrating the darker side of heavy music.

Founded in 1978 by father and son Terry and Alan Jones, Pagan Altar have become cult favourites in traditional doom metal. Following Terry Jones's death in 2015, the band continued with vocalist Brendan Radigan, known for his work with Sumerlands. Their return to Dutch Doom Days marks their first appearance at the festival since 2007.

Joining them are British gothic doom band Godthrymm, featuring musicians with connections to My Dying Bride, and Bradford's Wolves in Winter, whose epic, melodic sound draws comparisons to Candlemass, Cathedral and Pallbearer.

The Dutch contingent includes Façade, known for their atmospheric approach to doom/death metal, alongside Sordid Empire, whose music combines blackened doom, death metal and experimental influences. Rotterdam-area sludge and post-doom outfit Afgrond complete the line-up with heavy, low-tuned riffs and growling Dutch-language vocals.

Saturday line-up

  • Pagan Altar (UK, traditional doom metal)
  • Godthrymm (UK, gothic doom metal)
  • Wolves in Winter (UK, epic doom metal)
  • Façade (Netherlands, doom/death metal)
  • Sordid Empire (Netherlands, blackened doom/death metal)
  • Afgrond (Netherlands, sludge and post-doom)

Description

Baroeg is a legendary subcultural pop venue in Rotterdam, known as the city’s home base for hard and alternative music. Since the early 1980s it has been the go-to spot for metal, punk, hardcore, rock, gothic, industrial, psychobilly and other underground styles. What started as an open youth centre grew into a full pop podium with a loyal community and its own annual festival, Baroeg Open Air.

The venue sits in the Lombardijen neighbourhood by the Spinozapark and has an intimate club vibe: a compact hall with a low stage, solid sound system and a bar where artists and visitors mingle. For many underground and alternative fans in Rotterdam, Baroeg is less a random venue and more a second living room.
