Rotterdam’s EDGE art competition seeks local talent

ROTTERDAM, 27 November 2024 – A new art competition is set to transform the construction site of EDGE Coolsingel into a creative landmark in Rotterdam. Talented local artists are invited to participate, turning construction fences into vibrant canvases.

Edge seeks Rotterdam artists for Coolsingel art project

Construction on EDGE Coolsingel, a notable new building along Rotterdam's iconic Coolsingel, is progressing. To mark this milestone, a unique art competition titled "Show me your heart" has been launched, offering Rotterdam-based artists the opportunity to use the construction fences as a large-scale urban canvas. The initiative runs from November 2024 to June 2026.

Art and construction merge in the heart of Rotterdam

EDGE’s competition highlights the creative essence of Rotterdam, a city well known for its blend of architectural innovation and artistic expression. Every three months, artists can submit proposals through the competition’s official website, www.showmeyour.art. Selected works will be showcased on 11-by-2-metre wooden fences encircling the construction site, directly opposite Rotterdam’s City Hall.

Melissa Moria inaugurates the project

Local visual artist Melissa Moria has been chosen to launch the project. Known for her focus on the interaction between humans and nature, Moria’s work often explores themes like urbanisation and environmental awareness. Her recent mural in the Agniesebuurt demonstrated her ability to reflect Rotterdam’s diversity and charm. For the EDGE Coolsingel project, she will transform the site’s fencing into a dynamic artwork, connecting the community through sustainability-inspired visuals.

Prize for the winning artist

The competition will culminate in June 2026 with the announcement of a winner. The prize includes a permanent installation in EDGE Coolsingel, chosen by a combination of public votes and the project team. This offers an enduring showcase of how art contributes to Rotterdam’s vibrant streetscape.

The EDGE Coolsingel construction site is located at Coolsingel 75, directly across from Rotterdam City Hall. This central area is easily accessible by public transport, with trams and metro lines stopping nearby. The prominent location ensures high visibility for participating artists.
