ROTTERDAM, 3 November 2025 – To keep the region moving despite increasing congestion, Zuid-Holland Bereikbaar has launched the new ReisWijs app — a tool that rewards people for travelling smarter. By walking, cycling, carpooling, taking public transport or working from home, users earn coins that can be exchanged for gift cards, along with points for badges and prize draws.
The app aims to encourage sustainable travel choices and reduce rush-hour traffic in South Holland, benefiting both commuters and the environment.
Smarter travel rewarded
ReisWijs is an initiative by Zuid-Holland Bereikbaar in collaboration with Toertje B.V., the creators of the popular Ommetje app by the Hersenstichting. Using GPS, ReisWijs tracks travel behaviour while maintaining privacy, rewarding participants for greener choices.
“Travellers who avoid driving during rush hour help ease congestion,” said Marjolein van Meteren, management team member at Zuid-Holland Bereikbaar. “Choosing a different mode, route or time not only saves time and reduces stress, but also frees up space for essential road users such as emergency services and delivery traffic.”

Making sustainable choices feel rewarding
According to Sander Frans, co-founder of Toertje and ReisWijs, the goal is to make sustainable travel enjoyable rather than burdensome. “Today, accessibility is a necessity, not a luxury. Sustainable travel often feels like a sacrifice — it should feel like you’re winning. That’s exactly what ReisWijs does. We reward every green choice: walking, taking public transport, carpooling, or travelling outside rush hour.”
The app provides personal feedback on movement, CO₂ savings and air quality impact. Participants can also join local “challenges” for extra motivation, making the transition to sustainable habits fun and accessible.
Where to get (and use) the ReisWijs app
ReisWijs can be downloaded via reiswijs.nu, the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The programme operates across South Holland, including Rotterdam, The Hague and surrounding municipalities.
