Charging Your Electric Vehicle in Rotterdam: A Comprehensive Overview

Charging your electric vehicle in Rotterdam: A comprehensive overview

Rotterdam, a city committed to improving air quality, is actively promoting the use of electric vehicles. With over 2,200 public charging stations installed across the city, Rotterdam is making electric vehicle charging accessible and convenient.

Public Charging Stations

The city's public charging stations are strategically located to ensure easy access for electric vehicle owners. However, it's important to note that standard parking fees apply even when your vehicle is charging at these stations if they're located in a paid parking area. You can find the locations of these charging stations on the city's parking map or on platforms like Chargemap.

Charging Squares

In addition to individual charging stations, Rotterdam has established five charging squares. These are public areas equipped with multiple charging points, allowing several vehicles to charge simultaneously. Spaces marked with a cross, plug icon, and corresponding traffic sign are reserved exclusively for electric vehicles that are charging. The five charging squares in Rotterdam are:

Cor Kieboomplein

The charging square at Cor Kieboomplein has three charging stations, each with four charging points. At this charging square, twelve electric cars can be charged simultaneously. The charging square is located at Cor Kieboomplein near Jan Pettersonstraat. Four of the twelve parking spaces are exclusively for electric cars. The other eight spaces can be used by both electric and non-electric car drivers. These spaces can be designated exclusively for electric cars at a later time, when the charging demand increases.

Nassauhaven Noord

The charging square at Nassauhaven Noord has two charging stations, each with two charging points. At this charging square, four electric cars can be charged simultaneously. In addition, there are two DC chargers, both of which are reserved for electric shared cars and cannot be used for charging your electric car. The charging square is located at Nassauhaven near house number 40.

Schiedamse Vesthof

The charging square at Schiedamse Vesthof has four charging stations, each with two charging points. In addition, there is also a DC charger, which is accessible for electric cars with a ChaDeMo plug. Therefore, at this charging square, nine electric cars can be charged simultaneously. The charging square is located at Schiedamse Vesthof on the side of Schiedamse Vest.

Stieltjesstraat

The charging square at Stieltjesstraat has four charging stations, each with two charging points. In addition, there is also a DC charger, which is accessible for electric cars with a ChaDeMo plug. Therefore, at this charging square, nine electric cars can be charged simultaneously. The charging square is located at Stieltjesstraat near Villa Zebra.

Veerhaven

The charging square Veerkracht is located at Veerhaven. On this square, there are 5 charging stations, each with two charging points. At this charging square, 10 electric cars can be charged simultaneously. Six of the ten parking spaces are specifically for electric cars. The other 4 spaces can be used by both electric and non-electric car drivers. These spaces can be designated exclusively for electric cars at a later time, when the charging demand increases. Note that there are various charging areas in the general vicinity, besides Veerkracht.

Fast Charging Stations

For those in need of a quick power boost, Rotterdam offers several fast charging stations. One of them, located at Stadionweg (Rotterdam South), can accommodate four cars charging simultaneously. This station features two 'hyperchargers' that can provide up to 300 kilowatt-hours of charge.

Requesting a Public Charging Station

If you're a resident or work in Rotterdam and own an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, you can request a new public charging station in your area through the laadpaalnodig.nl portal. This website also provides an overview of all public charging stations within the municipality.

Reporting a Malfunction

In case of a malfunction at a public charging station, you can call the number listed on the charging station. Helpdesk employees can often solve the problem remotely, ensuring minimal disruption to your charging needs.

Innovative Projects

Rotterdam is not just stopping at providing charging infrastructure. The city is also participating in innovative projects and experiments for electric driving and charging, such as developing a battery for storing sustainable energy and an app for delayed and wireless charging.
