What’s the vibe?

Twenty years after Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel first turned workplace panic into couture comedy, the gang is back in New York. Miranda Priestly returns to the polished corridors of Runway Magazine, but the real threat is no longer an eager young assistant. It is the past, now wearing better shoes.

Emily, once Miranda’s loyal assistant, has become powerful in her own right. That gives the sequel its juiciest angle: old hierarchies, bruised egos, media in decline and women who know exactly where to place the verbal knife.

Expect glossy offices, icy looks, weaponised politeness, sharp fashion and enough nostalgia to make you briefly consider whether your own wardrobe needs a performance review.

Why you might like it

  • Eyes: Big fashion, New York gloss, dramatic entrances and outfits that seem designed to make normal coats feel like personal failures.
  • Heart: The return of Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel gives the film a built-in emotional pull, especially if the 2006 original lives rent-free in your brain.
  • Mind: Beneath the comedy sits a smart hook about print media, changing power structures and what happens when former assistants stop being afraid.

Critical reception

Early reactions have been warmer than many sequel-sceptics expected. First responses praised the film’s humour, its returning cast and its mix of nostalgia with a more current media-world conflict. Several early viewers singled out Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci as key reasons the film works.

Dutch film outlet Filmkrant also responded positively, describing the sequel as stronger than the average ladies’ night-friendly revival and noting that it feels like a proud return to the kind of mid-budget crowd-pleaser cinema rarely seen now.

At the time of writing, stable average scores from major review aggregators were still developing, so treat early reactions as a mood check rather than a final verdict. No major awards or nominations have been announced yet.

Scene to watch for

Watch for the first proper face-off between Miranda and Emily. The real fun is not just in what they say, but in the pauses, posture and perfectly controlled facial expressions. This is where the sequel can prove whether it has more than nice coats and legacy charm.

Recommended pairing

Make a mini fashion ritual of it. Dress a little sharper than usual, go for a pre-film drink with something fresh and citrusy, then follow the screening with a late bite that feels slightly more polished than your usual cinema snack.

If you are seeing it during the day, pair it with breakfast, strong coffee and a post-film walk through the city centre. Rotterdam may not be New York, but a dramatic pavement strut is still allowed.

Need-to-knows

KINO is giving the Rotterdam release a little extra theatre. On 29 April, KINO hosts an exclusive preview where tickets include a drink and bite. On Sunday 3 May, the cinema also has a breakfast screening with a themed bagel, juice and coffee or iced latte.

The film’s trailer reportedly drew huge attention online within its first 24 hours, which says plenty about how strongly the original still sits in pop culture. There has also been discussion around cameos, returning cast members and the absence of a few familiar faces from the 2006 film.

The story is written by Aline Brosh McKenna, who also wrote the original film adaptation. That matters, because the first film’s bite came as much from its timing and dialogue as from the fashion.
