A funny, bruised Nordic caper about two brothers, buried loot and a mind that will not stay put, from Anders Thomas Jensen with Mads Mikkelsen in deadpan mode.

Film tip: Mads Mikkelsen is riotous in The Last Viking

Two estranged brothers, one buried loot, and a memory that resets like a scratched CD. Anders Thomas Jensen turns a violent treasure chase into a tender, chaotic comedy about family and identity.

What’s the vibe?

After fifteen years in prison, Anker wants his cut of the bank-job money his brother Manfred buried. Only Manfred’s mind is not what it was; today he is a Viking, tomorrow he is John Lennon. With a ruthless rival on their heels, the brothers set off to find the stash and, awkwardly, themselves. Expect quick-fire slapstick, rough-and-ready violence, deadpan Nordic humour, and a soft centre about brotherhood.

Expect: black comedy, odd-couple road chase, memory lapses, brotherly tenderness, offbeat violence, Nordic deadpan.

Why you might like it

  • Eyes: scrubby forests, battered suits, and comic props that pay off in well-timed gags.
  • Heart: beneath the brawls, two men trying to recognise each other again.
  • Mind: a playful riff on identity, masculinity, and the stories families tell to cope.

Critical reception

Jensen’s track record (Adam’s Apples, Riders of Justice) has critics primed for another blend of bruises and warmth, with early chatter praising the nimble tone and Mads Mikkelsen’s poker-faced comedy opposite Nikolaj Lie Kaas. Full scores are still settling as the film rolls out, so expect the consensus to sharpen across opening week.

Scene to watch for

A roadside showdown that turns from menace to absurdity the moment Manfred’s “Viking” logic derails everyone’s plan.

Recommended pairing

Keep dinner casual and mobile: think warm hand pies or a thick slice of focaccia in your pocket, then take a late wander by the Maas to trade favourite gags and decide whether the film is sweet on redemption or just honest about how messy brothers can be. If the wind picks up, ride the tram a few extra stops and keep the debate going like two crooks plotting the next move.
