'DIVA' exhibition highlights iconic costumes at Kunsthal

HAPPENING 26 October 2024–2 March 2025 | This autumn, Kunsthal Rotterdam invites visitors to experience 'DIVA,' an exhibition examining the cultural significance and evolution of the term 'diva' through historic and modern icons. The exhibit features over sixty iconic costumes from legendary performers, exploring their impact on fashion, society, and self-expression.

The history and influence of the 'diva' at Kunsthal

Running from 26 October 2024 to 2 March 2025, Kunsthal Rotterdam’s ‘DIVA’ exhibition presents a wide-ranging exploration of the 'diva' phenomenon. This retrospective spans over a century of cultural evolution, from 19th-century opera stars to modern pop icons. With more than sixty costumes and designs by renowned fashion houses, the exhibition examines how divas have continually redefined creative expression and personal identity. Featured artists include Maria Callas, Josephine Baker, Shirley Bassey, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, as well as Elton John, Björk, and Billie Eilish.

A journey from opera to modern-day pop

The exhibition's layout, designed by Studio Harm Rensink, guides visitors through several sections, each reflecting a different era and interpretation of divahood. The experience begins with early opera stars like Adelina Patti and Maria Callas, showcasing costumes from performances and portraits that capture the essence of 19th-century divas. Through video clips, costumes, and handwritten texts, visitors can see how early divas influenced societal views on femininity, creativity, and power, often challenging conventions and facing public scrutiny.

Contemporary icons and cultural shifts

A transition into contemporary divas illustrates the evolution of divahood. Featured pieces include Tina Turner’s famous flame dress by Bob Mackie, Rihanna's dramatic Met Gala outfits, and Lady Gaga’s Valentino blue gown from the Golden Globes. The exhibition highlights how modern divas continue to build on the foundations laid by their predecessors. These artists navigate the intersection of fame, fashion, and personal autonomy, redefining the boundaries of gender expression and celebrity influence.

Kunsthal Director Marianne Splint notes that the exhibition reflects on the complex legacy of the term "diva," a concept that has undergone reclamation and reinterpretation within performance art. The exhibition places a spotlight on divas who have extended their influence into business and activism, such as Barbra Streisand’s contributions to film and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty brand.

Reflections on fame and personal cost

In addition to celebrating the glamour and achievements of these performers, ‘DIVA’ also presents a more reflective view on the potential challenges of fame. Whitney Houston's black and gold dress from The Bodyguard and personal items from Amy Winehouse and Edith Piaf serve as reminders of the personal struggles faced by some of these icons. The exhibition balances moments of triumph with insights into the pressures of maintaining a public persona.
