Re-Score: The Burial of Kojo

Ghanaian trumpeter Peter Somuah gives The Burial of Kojo a new live soundtrack at LantarenVenster, joined by vocalists Latanya Alberto and MiDi KwaKwa.

The 2018 film is the feature debut of Ghanaian filmmaker and musician Blitz Bazawule. It follows young Esi as she searches for her father after he disappears during an expedition to a gold mine. Family, dreams and spirituality intertwine in a magical-realist story set against the landscapes of Ghana.

For this Black Soil Live Cinema presentation, Somuah has composed a new score performed live during the screening. Jazz, soul, gospel, highlife and West African rhythms become part of the film's emotional world, combining Somuah's Ghanaian roots and contemporary jazz with Latanya Alberto's neo-soul and MiDi KwaKwa's Afro-influenced alternative R&B.

Rather than simply accompanying the images, the musicians respond to the film in real time, creating a live dialogue between cinema and music.
