ROTTERDAM, 14 August 2024 – This summer, the Groot Handelsgebouw (GHG) in Rotterdam becomes a focal point for art and creativity, offering a range of unique installations and exhibitions for locals and visitors alike. The iconic building is set to transform into a lively centre for cultural engagement and innovation.
The Groot Handelsgebouw (GHG) in Rotterdam is positioning itself as a dynamic hub for creativity and cultural innovation. This summer, the building is home to several art installations and projects that seek to engage both local communities and visitors. The goal is to provide a welcoming space for artistic expression, where everyone is encouraged to explore and participate.
The vitrine project showcases local talent
One of the latest initiatives at GHG is the Vitrine Project, developed in partnership with Rotterdam's cultural bureau DAR. Approximately 20 display cases within the building have been filled with works by emerging local artists, designers, and creators. These displays include graphic art, mixed media sculptures, paintings, and even furniture crafted from garden hoses. Passers-by can learn more about the artists by scanning a QR code on the glass. The project is intended to build a sense of community through art and creativity.
Collision project promotes interaction and dialogue
The Collision Project, a well-regarded art installation programme, continues to garner attention both inside and outside the building. Originating in New York, this project invites artists to use spaces as their canvas, creating immersive experiences for visitors. Currently, wall murals by Rotterdam-based illustrators such as Maaike Canne and Levi Jacobs, along with works by the Olu Olu design studio, can be seen at the Groot Handelsgebouw.
Caleidoscopic construction adds colour and vibrancy
Earlier this spring, a new installation known as Caleidoscopic Construction was introduced, combining art and architecture. This vibrant arch, inspired by the building's design, greets visitors in the lobby, casting a spectrum of shadows and colours when sunlight passes through its materials. The installation aims to reshape perceptions of the building and its future.
Maaskant park offers green space and creativity
The Maaskant Park, once designed for the movement of trucks, has been transformed into a green oasis where visitors can stroll, have lunch, or play a game of pétanque. Recently, a new mural was unveiled as part of the Collision Project, further enhancing the park's aesthetic and cultural value. This space is now open to all Rotterdammers and curious visitors.
Film screenings in collaboration with IFFR
From July to September, the lobby of the Groot Handelsgebouw is hosting screenings as part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). Under the programme ‘Late Nights in Lobby A,’ film enthusiasts are invited to enjoy a unique cinematic experience in an unconventional setting. Recent screenings have included the comedy "Tampopo" (1985), accompanied by Asian snacks and beats, as well as the film "Big Night" served with Italian antipasti and spritz, in collaboration with De Kunstfabriek.

The Groot Handelsgebouw, situated next to Rotterdam Central Station, houses a diverse community of over 450 companies. Built in 1953, it symbolises Rotterdam’s post-war reconstruction and covers 120,000 square metres over eight floors. Jamestown, the building’s current manager, is actively involved in various projects aimed at preserving its heritage while adapting it for the future to enhance opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and community engagement.
