A sold out Rotown for Icelandic music group Vök

Four years after their debut concert in the Netherlands, Icelandic group Vök return to sell out one of Rotterdam's legendary concert venues.

The career of many European music acts starts in Groningen. The Eurosonic Noorderslag festival is the place to discover artists. It’s the biggest showcase festival in Europe and offers a stage to European artists in four days. Eurosonic Noorderslag, where the country of Iceland was in the spotlight in 2015, also presented the band Vök. Four years after their debut concert in the Netherlands, the band plays a sold-out Rotown show with 250 visitors, after a full concert in WORM two years ago.

CIEL

This time, in addition to Rotterdam, the band also play in Amsterdam (Melkweg), Utrecht (EKKO) and Groningen (VERA), where they are assisted by CIEL from Brighton and Groningen. Four young musicians who will bring you shoegazey trips.

"Vök"

The band name "Vök" is translated from Icelandic "resonance", the quality in a sound of being deep, full, and reverberating. The band makes intense, beautifully constructed electropop, with melodic vocals, grim sounds and instruments that cannot be placed directly.

Iceland is almost three times the size of the Netherlands but has only 320.000 inhabitants. The land of troubled volcanoes and where ninety days a year the days are almost entirely dark. The temperature in Iceland is cold, but it has a warm pop climate that is felt far beyond the island. The band Vök also makes this typical Icelandic music sound. The band mixes melancholic electronics and melodic vocals with saxophone and guitar.

Hypnotic and sensual

Vök brings you the hypnotic of The xx with the sensuality of The Knife and Poliça's overdubbing. Vök has already released a number of EPs with positive reactions and a large fan base as a result, so that they have already played at several festivals in the Netherlands, including Eurosonic, Nordic Delight and Into The Woods. This evening in Rotown they prove that their musical journey is far from finished!

"Rotterdam is a city that lives, innovates and innovates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; developments that Pathé also identifies as a company," says Doron Kurz, Pathé's Director of Commerce. "Therefore, we would like to investigate whether there is a desire among the residents of Rotterdam to experience the best film experience in the night hours with us. A visit to the cinema turns an ordinary day into a special day. And now also a special night!"

In addition to popular films from the current range, such as Aquaman, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and the most successful film of 2018 Bohemian Rhapsody, Pathé Schouwburgplein will also exhibit the top 3 films of 2018; Avengers Infinity War, Black Panther and Mission Impossible Fall Out in 3D. There are also nightly premiere screenings of the new drama film White Boy Rick, starring Matthew McConaughey.

Tickets for the night shows can now be purchased on the Pathé website

Dutch-New Zealand band My Baby in sold-out Annabel Rotterdam

Dutch-New Zealand band My Baby in sold-out Annabel Rotterdam

It's 28 October 2018. Tonight Annabel is hosting My Baby, a Dutch-New Zealand band from Amsterdam. The location is a former concrete factory and is located behind the Hofplein, within walking distance of the Central Station. Poppodium Annabel is a nightlife venue in Rotterdam that has existed since 2015. The hall seats 1,500 visitors and the concert today is sold-out.

My Baby played in Rotterdam a few months ago at Bevrijdingsfestival Zuid-Holland and fortunately for them, they are still fresh in our memories. Today they are touring the Netherlands to promote their new album ‘Mounaiki’. Their music is a mix of blues, country and funk. Everything is thrown into the cauldron, melted down and released on the audience as a sort of voodoo ritual. It is compelling, it is exciting and the songs are all brilliant.

The show is sold-out, but the band still struggles to get the audience in the right mood. Maybe because there isn’t a support-act or maybe because it just became daylight saving time, and everybody is already a bit tired. My Baby is Joost van Dijck (drums), his sister Cato van Dijck (vocals) and Daniel 'Dafreez' Johnston (guitars) and although the set and the stories seem slick and routine, you can clearly see that they share a lot of enthusiasm on stage.

It’s no wonder that My Baby is widely praised internationally because this music bridges multiple dimensions. Stupefying, danceable and beautiful: just as suitable for the dance floor as over the headphones. Between the songs, Cato van Dijck has multiple dress changes and several times crawls in the skin of someone else. It keeps the performance interesting to watch.

The setlist is alternated with quieter new songs between the exciting old songs. It is no coincidence that the encore performance with upbeat songs like 'Uprising' and 'Make a Hundred' make for a complete dancing party.

Rotterdam's skyline will never be the same again. A 215-metre structure with nearly 60 storeys; the Zalmhaven Tower in Rotterdam will be the tallest residential tower in the Netherlands. Make that, tallest building, period. The mixed-use tower will have 256 apartments, plenty of office space as well as a restaurant and a nightclub.

The project also includes two 70-metre residential buildings (designed by KAAN Architecten) which will house 196 apartments and 33 single-family homes as well as a shared roof garden and parking facilities.

Is Zalmhaven Tower really 215 metres high? Well, kinda.

The residential tower will stand at 190 metres while a 25-metre antenna will sit on top of the building. At 215 metres, it's 30 metres higher than the Euromast which itself is a giant mast.

When will Zalmhaven Tower be complete?

The project should be complete by sometime in late 2021 or early 2022.

How much does an apartment in Zalmhaven Tower cost?

Prices start at €360,000 for a 61m2 apartment. A 297m2 penthouse will set you back €1,850,000.
