Los Angeles duo Automatic heads to Rotown in Rotterdam with a sound built on wiry psych-pop, deep basslines and a cool, minimalist pulse. Their music leans into wave, punk, dub and funk without becoming weighed down by any of it, which gives the band a stripped-back style that still feels sharp and urgent.

The group is perhaps best known for Too Much Money, a track that captures their bass-driven approach at its most direct, but newer material shows a broader emotional range. On the album Is It Now?, Automatic keeps the same core sound while opening the door to darker and more affecting pop songs. That record was produced by Loren Humphrey, known for work with acts including Arctic Monkeys and Arctic Monkeys-adjacent indie circles, and the result brings extra depth to the band’s echoing drums and taut rhythms. There is also a neat link back to Los Angeles music history in the band’s name, which nods to the Go-Go’s song Automatic.
