Filmconcert: Central do Brasil

A much-loved Brazilian classic gets a fresh live treatment at this special screening in Rotterdam. As part of the opening night of the first Dutch edition of the Composers Soundtracks Festival, Central do Brasil will be shown with its original score performed live by the festival string ensemble.

The 1998 film by Walter Salles remains one of Brazil’s most celebrated road movies, following the unlikely bond between a disillusioned former schoolteacher and a young boy searching for his father. Set against the backdrop of a harsh and fragmented Brazil, the story moves from the chaos of Rio’s station life into a moving journey across the country. With live accompaniment, the emotional weight of the film is likely to land even more directly, bringing music and cinema together in a way that suits the intimate setting of LantarenVenster especially well.

The ensemble for the evening features Anselmo Mancini on piano and artistic direction, alongside Michael Rein and Natália Ribeiro on violin, Francesca Wiersma on viola, Sebastiaan Halsema on cello, Louis van der Mespel on double bass and Tiago Lageira on guitar.
