Joe Emanuel

Singer Joe Emanuel, also known as Jorginho Paunussa, brings a music theatre concert to LantarenVenster in Rotterdam rooted in family history, identity and Molukan heritage. With a warm, soulful voice and influences ranging from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Whitney Houston, Emanuel developed an early love for singing and harmony. During a stay in New York in 2012, he began writing his own music.

Since then, he has released several songs and performed with his band, writing personal lyrics about dreams, loss, hope and identity, always with clear links to faith, groundedness and his Molukan background. He also sang for more than a decade in a black gospel group and worked as a backing vocalist for artists including Giovanca, Typhoon and Edsilia Rombley.

This concert is built around the story of his grandparents, who arrived in Rotterdam in 1951 with other Molukan KNIL families. That family history forms the heart of the performance and connects it to the commemoration of 75 years of Molukan presence in the Netherlands. So this is not just a concert, but a personal and historical reflection carried by song.
