Chanpan

New York trio Chanpan bring a fresh, hard-to-pin-down mix of dance pop, breakbeats, jazzy soul and playful indie to Rotown in Rotterdam. The group started out busking in Chinatown to fund their first recordings, which already gives you a decent clue that this is not a polished industry project dropped in from nowhere. Even with only two EPs out, they managed to catch attention quickly in both music and fashion circles, and now they are crossing the Atlantic for a first Rotterdam show.

The listing places them somewhere near NewJeans, Hiatus Kaiyote and Gorillaz, though there is also a hint of PinkPantheress and Stereolab in the mix. Their track endlessly is named as the song tip, and the EP of the same name involved producers with credits linked to names such as Brittany Howard, Paris Texas, BTS’s V, Sevdaliza, SZA and Doechii. In other words, this looks like one for people who like pop music when it gets a little left of centre.
