ROTTERDAM, 5 March 2025 – The municipality of Rotterdam has introduced a new subsidy scheme to support businesses developing innovative hydrogen projects. The initiative aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption and contribute to the transition towards a sustainable economy. A total budget of €2 million has been allocated for the scheme.
Support for hydrogen sector businesses
The subsidy is available to companies already active in the hydrogen sector or those looking to enter the market. It covers feasibility studies related to hydrogen innovation and experimental developments in production, import, and application of hydrogen as a raw material, fuel, or storage medium.
While the focus is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), larger companies may also apply if their projects involve collaboration with innovative SMEs. Businesses based outside Rotterdam are eligible, provided their projects have a measurable impact within the city.
Call for applications from 10 March
Alderman Robert Simons (Port and Economy) highlighted the importance of hydrogen for both the energy transition and economic growth. “Hydrogen is essential for the energy transition and offers significant opportunities for the economy and employment of the future. With this subsidy scheme, we give entrepreneurs the opportunity to lead in hydrogen technology development. I encourage businesses to submit their innovative ideas and help build the economy of tomorrow.”
Applications for the subsidy can be submitted from 10 March. Funding amounts range from €150,000 to €400,000 per project, covering 25% to 50% of costs depending on the project phase and company size. Additional financial incentives are available for businesses based in Rotterdam.
