Benjamin Lackner Quintet with Mathias Eick

Five strong voices from Europe’s jazz scene come together in the Benjamin Lackner Quintet, with three of the players linked to ECM Records and Mathias Eick and Maciej Obara placed right at the front of the sound. Led by German pianist and composer Benjamin Lackner, this quintet leans into melodic writing, tight interplay, and grooves that stay light on their feet.

Trumpeter Mathias Eick brings a clear, lyrical approach shaped by hints of Norwegian folk colour, while alto saxophonist Maciej Obara adds intensity and a more cinematic sense of improvisation, where urgency and abstraction can sit side by side. At the piano, Lackner builds a tension between openness and structure, giving the horns room to respond as a flowing front line. The rhythm section keeps it flexible, moving easily between intimate passages and bigger collective bursts.

The set is framed around Spindrift, presenting a group sound that’s elegant, layered, and very much about chemistry between distinct personalities.
