A moving multimedia tribute to the legendary voice of the Arab world, The Phonograph Changed Me opens the 2025 edition of the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival with a unique interdisciplinary performance at de Doelen’s Willem Burger Zaal.

Fifty years after the death of Umm Kulthum, the icon whose voice came to embody the emotional and poetic soul of Arabic music, this concert reflects on her lasting legacy. Created in collaboration with Marmoucha Orchestra, composer and filmmaker Toni Geitani, and author Willem Bruls, the evening journeys through Kulthum’s early career and cultural significance. From her musical inspirations to her first recordings, the project blends storytelling, live performance, and film in a heartfelt homage to an artist whose impact still resonates across generations.

The evening also features a pre-concert conversation, Egyptian snacks, and a special performance of Egyptian operatic repertoire by Arturo den Hartog.
